vCenter Converter Standalone 6.2.0 missing useSudo flag

Greetings,

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Standalone 6.2.0 software requires modification of the converter-agent.xml file in order to convert Ubuntu VMs as seen here on the KB1008164:

VMware Knowledge Base

My question and issue is that this same software that I have installed, there is no such useSudo flag at all on my converter-agent.xml file, and I have recently installed the program, no one else has modified the file, is the knowledge base file outdated? What am I missing? I am kindly requesting assistance. Thank you.

Best,

connecting to the converter helper server on the destination virtual machine

Hi,

I am trying to convert the one RHEL 7.1 physical machine into virtual machine everything is going smoothly but once starts conversion at the stage of

connecting to the converter helper server on the destination virtual machine - it's get hung and further it's not loading.

Any idea on this

Vmware converter standalone fails when source is a VM previously converted.

I converted a physical machine to a VM, and then I am trying to convert tha same VM this time as source, to a different version of Vmware, from 6.0 to 6.5. I cannot hook the source to my Vcenter because the versions are incompatible. So I point my converter standalone to the VM and it always fails with the error above. I changed the IP address at the source VM, regenerated the host keys, etc. Nothing works. How do I tell the Converter to ignore host keys and do the job? Is there a workaround? I reinstalled the converter, etc. Is there a file that the Converter leaves in a VM so it cannot be used as source for a new conversion?

ESXI 6.5 WEB CLIENT

We have two hosts. One is the ESXI 6.5 and the other is an older version. We have virtual machine we would like to migrate from older host  to bigger host. The hosts aren't managed by a datacenter. We know we can migrate if both hosts were on the vcenter server, but we don't know how to obtain vcenter server, or if we already have it with our versions of ESXI. Will the standalone converter, convert a virtual machine, from one host to the other, and which file do we use on the converter?

Vmware Converter - Conversion FAILS WITH RHEL 7 from Hyper-V if VM is offline

Hello,

I'm trying to migrate some RHEL 7.6 from Hyper-V to VmWare Esxi, conversion is done with stopped virtual machines, but when I try to start in vmware, I allways have a 'dracut timeout' message.

This is our environent, and this is how I was trying to convert.

RHEL 7.x computers are virtual machines that are running under Hyper-V (Windows 2012 R2), are Generation 2 (UEFI boot), using dynamic disk. Before conversion virtual machines are stopped.

VmWare converter connects to Hyper-V and I select stopped computer, the conversion process from 'VmWare converted' ends without errors.  And target vmware computer is set to Linux-rhel 7, and Uefi...

Until here all is fine...

But, when computer starts on VmWare, it allways fails with a 'dracut-initqueue timeout' message...

I've tried to convert with live virtual machine, but for some reason LVM volumes are converted to standard partitions and then we need to reconstruct later..

For this reason I'm trying to convert from Hyper-V when Virtual machines are offline, but seems that doesn't work with Rhel 7

There is any solution? Does is possible to convert a Linux Red hat 7 when virtual machine is stopped/offline, there is a way to fix this?

Regards

Converter standalone so slow... 4MB/s

I'm migrating a VM with 1TB of disk from an ESXi 6.0 host to an ESXi 6.7 host.  Machines are on the same subnet using 1GbE.  I'm seeing approx 4MB/s.  Shouldn't this be faster?

We have large Hyper V which needs to be migrated however after V2V of the VM, the OS does not boot into OS.

We have tried Windows 2012, 2016, Linux and non has been successful

we are using latest version on stand alone converter (6.2.0.1)

The source VMs are EFI and after conversion, the windows logo and it get stuck there and eventually errors 0xc0000001 (windows)

On windows VM, when boot into the recovery and run diskpart, all the partitions lists correctly

I am currently using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 6.2.0 build-8466193. I am trying to convert a Windows 10 machine and placing the destination file to a network share with the destination type VMware Workstation. I am getting the following error - "Error - FAILED: A general system error occurred: The user name or password is incorrect". I can only guess that the network share needs a username and pw but there isn't a place to put it before initiating a conversion. Please advise.

Converter for Older 32 bit Ubuntu Server?

$

We have retired an old PBX that ran Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit.  Can anyone tell me if an older version of converter would install on that OS and work? If so where could I get it? I don't see it available for download anymore.

Just wanting to convert it for archive and use the server for a test lab.  or, any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Old version of Converter

Does anyone have the previous version of the converter so I can try and use it to convert my machines?  I'm having the same difficulties everyone else is having with the current version.

I've done a bunch of searching in other forums and google, but they all point back to the VMWare converter website, which only has this current version posted on 1/31.  Does anyone know if a new release will be coming out soon?

Thanks in advance

Hyper-V convert on server with cifs share datastore

$

Greetings,

I'm trying to convert some 2012 R2 VMs.  The physical servers use datastores on various NetApp arrays and they are accessed via a CIFS share.  The environment is ESXi 6.7.  When I run the stand-alone installer (6.2) on one of the Hyper-V servers, it fails in 1 of 2 ways depending on the credentials.

1.  If I connect to the server as administrator point to an offline vm on the share, it errors out being unable to obtain hardware information.

2.  If I connect using other credentials for accounts in the administrators group, I get permission denied.  This appears to be a UAC issue and is not surprising.

The problem with this is the local administrator does not have rights to the share even though it is full control from Everyone.  This is because NetApp considers Everyone to be Authenticated Users in the domain which a local administrator account is not.  It is a test environment with base builds so we are not worried about the obvious security hole for full control.

Is there a way to do this using the stand-alone convert on the servers?

I've also been experimenting with the StarWind Converter.  I was able to get converted vmdk files and they show up in vcenter, but neither will start up.  No disk shows up.  I did not see the second file I was expecting to do the import.

Any help on the best way to quickly and cleanly get Hyper-V in would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Problems Migrating Windows 2012 from Xen Server to ESXi

$

Hi,

I have been searching for info on my problem and can't seem to find anything.

I have a XenServer Pool, Version 6.5. I am using the VMWare Standalone Converter to attempt to migrate VMs over to ESXi 6.0. The linux VMs I did worked great, no issues.

The same can't be said for Windows Server 2012. The VMs migrate over but when they boot I am stuck on a couple of issues that I just can't get past:

- Constant restarts and BlueScreens trying to boot. Tried Windows repair with no luck. Sometime I can get into Safe Mode without any problems but it will not boot up into regular Windows.

- A BSOD caused by xen.sys that I was able to work around that then turned into no bootable drive.

I have tried combination of uninstalling the Xen Tools, not uninstalling, installing the VmWare tool, not installing, tried exporting OVF/OVA files from Xen, etc. Nothing seems to work. When I try to look back and remember what I did and didn't do my head starts hurting.

Getting to the point where I am almost ready give up and build the VMs from scratch in ESXi. It may take a week of 14 hours days but at least I can move on to other headaches.

Any help, links, guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

K

VMware converter to ESXi sticking at 1%

Just trying to virtualise an old Ubuntu box to a new install of ESXi 6.7 running on a Hetzer hosted server and I'm a little confused...

I think the process is getting stuck in transferring from physical machine to VM, probably because the VM doesn't have its own public IP address.

This is all quite distributed, with EXSi host, Windows box running VMWare vCentre converter and Ubuntu machine all on completely unconnected networks (other than via the Internet).

Although the ESXi box is multihomed, I've not worked out how to get ESXi allocate the 2nd IP address to the VM.

Any suggestions on beginners guides to doing this? I'm finding Google isn't my friend, thanks to all the different versions of EXSi.
