I have a legacy app that I need to keep running for a bit but it’s running on a very old laptop so I did a test run with VMware coverter to and ESXI 6.7 box I spun up. I wasn’t able to get it to boot normally but I was able to get it to boot in safe mode. The OS is Windows 7 (I know). It’s a temp fix until we can move the app off or upgrade to 10 for this one PC

Any idea what’s causing the error below? I saw some posts about display drivers but currently the only one installed is “vmware svga 3d”. Haven’t installed vmware tools yet.

I have seen other topics on this but none seem to match my scenario.

I have an older W2k3 server that is being upgraded to newer hardware and software.

In order for the software to be converted it has to be run on a non-production system.

I am trying to use VMware Converter to build a virtual machine for this case.

I successfully did this 2 years ago but for reasons beyond my control the project was put on hold

and has been picked up again this year. Unfortunately the VM I created 2 years ago is now grossly

out of date and must be rebuilt. Which is now failing.

I have already run into issues trying to do P2V to my vCenter environment so I am trying now

to run it into a VMware Workstation environment. While I can get farther using this method I cannot

get past the stop at 1%.

What I am seeing is on the destination share is a folder is created with two files in it a test.vmdk and test.vmx

along with a folder test.lck. The job status will say something along the lines of 'It'll be 1hour 30 minutes', after about 30 seconds

passes it says the job time will be 1 minute. At this point it deletes all the files it has placed on the share drive and kicks a job

failed. Reason is 'Unable to obtain the lock on virtual disks.'

I have tried 3 versions of Converter 4/5/6 disabled firewalls etc. Any ideas appreciated.

***UPDATE*** I may be on to something. I told it to pre-allocate the disk and now I am up to 3%. Fingers crossed.

**UPDATE 2** Ooof. Got to 94% and then failed with same error message. WTF?

**UPDATE 3** Managed to get it to run to 98% without error. Finally failed with Could not reconfigure VM at the end.

However it did NOT delete the files this time. Unfortunately the VM will not open. It launches but just sits at a black screen.

Trying to work through the .vmx file and see if I can spot a problem. Very odd.

I am trying to run the vmware vcenter converter standalone inside a Windows vmware fusion guest. (The purpose is to convert existing VHD and/or TIB to VMDK and I have no access with administrator rights to a windows based computer).

When I run the converter, I get the failed to impersonate error.

When I click OK I am presented with:

When I check:

netstat -ano | findstr 443

nothing is displayed.

So I check the log files in c:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs\

I notice several warning related to unsigned files and at the end (after the service is started) the line (#182 in the log below):

Can converter be run inside a vm? (if not, then why not if i am not trying to do p2v but simple v2v conversion)

What have I done wrong

For some reason, while using the converter software to move the shut down VM, it copies okay, but it's taking up too much space (apparently VMWare allows you to create a thin disk that is just large enough to fail when it is thickened). the VM is running CentOS 7 and is the only VM running on the host (and will be the only one running on the new host).

I'm trying to use a file-level copy using the live machine, and I get the unable to query source machine error every time.

I've unmounted everything other than /boot and / (there are two filesystems that are double-mounted, but they are unmounted), I have checked .bashrc for echo statements (there are none), I have made sure that /tmp is writable and can exec, the release file in /etc shows the correct info for the OS, and I can SSH and SCP to the machine without an issue. If you guys have any other ideas how to do this, or an alternative idea as to how I could shrink the VMDK a couple hundred gigs in order to be able to run it thick, I would appreciate it. I'll attach the log bundle.

I'm willing to entertain suggestions, would rather not have to add hardware to make this work and I've read a lot of posts on here as well as knowledgebase documents. I'm up for trying other products or other methods.

I'm trying to do a V2V on ESXi 6.0.0 using Standalone converter 6.2.0.

The vm is running Win Server 2012 R2 and I've tried it both initiating the conversion locally on the source vm (powered on with most services stopped and no AV) and initiating from another machine with the source VM powered off.

The target is always the same ESXi host (same as source guest vm).

It keeps failing around the 97% mark after 8-10 hrs.

We've few outdated servers running Windows Server 2003 which we are tying to move to ESXi host 6.5, i Vmware Vcenter Converter Standalone client 6 to move physical to VM but the error msgs shows "A general system error occurred: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host".  I've also attached the VCS Logs for your easy reference.

Hi , i want to convert a Windows XP Machine (Toshiba laptop) with VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5.3 but i receive the error :

"SSL exception : error:140000DB:SSL routines:SSL routines: short read"

In reading many posts regarding converting Debian 9 and it failing, I've also seen that "some" people have been able to work with the converted VM despite the failure.  I've further seen reference to disabling the converter from deleting the destination VM in the event of failure.  How would one do this?  The error message I'm getting at 98% is "cannot find source file /mnt/p2v-src-root/lib64/libc.so.6 during file copy (return code 1)". This is NOT a production scenario at the moment, so if I create a situation where I have to reload something, I can.  We're in a testing situation where we'd like to virtualize a production server for disaster recovery purposes and I've completely backed up the server and am working isolated from our production network.

The ultimately goal is to convert to VMWare and then export as a .OVA file for upload/deployment to AWS.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

When I downloaded VM vCenter Converter Standalone it no longer supports other Virtual Machine systems

I found this article in VMWare docs to Import a Parallels Virtual Machine into VMWare Fusion, and I found a VMware Knowledge Base article on moving between Fusion and Workstation.

Is it possible to go straight from Parallels to Workstation, or do I need to go through Fusion first?

I've used the current version of standalone converter several times and had no problems at all.

Now I want to convert a Windows-10 PC (retail key activated build 1903) to a Workstation VM, before I retire the machine.  I am logged in as the administrator and have "run as administrator" as well.  Before pressing the final button to submit I can read the source details, and the job submits (destination a LAN smb share) but fails with the above error.

I've disabled UAC as recommended somewhere, and joined the special VM ____ user to the administrators group although I never needed to do either thing previously.  I notice another user has hit the same problem in the last few days

Logs are attached in case anyone can help.  I may try uninstalling and re-installing when I get a moment and maybe updating to 1909, but I can't see why that  would help when it's the 1903 version I last converted.  Last option would be to use a backup of this machine to restore onto another existing or newly created VM, but I'd like to know why it's not working in any case.

I need to convert CentOS 7 P2V. In Converter (verison 6.2.0) i set static IP address but there is no possibility to put MAC Address. In my Company everything is filtered by MAC and this is a problem. After process start it just gets stuck on 1% with “Connecting to the Converter helper server on the destination virtual machine.”

I found this explanation https://communities.vmware.com/message/2220153#2220153 but I'm not sure that it's clear for me

I login to Converter Helper. IP is the same like I set at the beginning but MAC is wrong. I register new MAC for IP but this nothing change. I try also set HWADDRESS in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ and restart network service.

When i cancel converter job i get: “Error: Unable to connect to the Converter helper server on the destination virtual machine.”

After installing this software, I am getting the following error when starting to convert my local machine: "permission to perform this function is denied", this occurs at the selection of the source machine.  Any reason why?

We need to convert a File Server which is connected to SAN Storage. We have created 2 pools in the SAN storage and the 1st pool consists of Files and Data which are mounted to the physical servers. And the Second pool we are going to use for the VM Datastore.

The existing capacity details of File Server are as below: The E drive is mounted from the SAN Storage.

I would like to know:

1) How can I convert a P2V file server attached to a SAN Storage ?

2) Did the VMware Converter convert the Mounted SAN drives as well ?

3) What is the best practice to convert a File Server in this scenario ?

4) Please share a step-by-step guide or reference link to perform the task.

Hi,

I have a problem with P2V for machines:

- CentOS Linux release 7.7.1908 (Core) processor Intel (R) Core (TM) i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20GHz, ram 8GB [TEST]

- CentOS Linux release 7.6.1810 (Core) [PROD]

I want to transfer this to ESXi 6.5 Hypervisor Free Version but I have a problem. The converter ends, it looks ok on the task list, but it gets something like this in the logs (attachment)

In addition, ESXi gets something like this:

Failed - There are insufficient licenses to complete this operation.

And in detail i found:

Description Reconfigure this virtual machine

Virtual machine: centos7

StateFailed - There are insufficient licenses to complete this operation.

Errors

• Feature 'Hot-Pluggable virtual HW' is not licensed with this edition

First, thank you all for this wonderful community, it helped me a lot in the past answering my questions by browsing the forums!

I got the following problem. I want to convert a physical linux machine using the Converter Standalone 5.1.

Therefore I am trying to set up a static IP address for my helper VM machine but because I am within a enterprise network (which does not allow DHCP) I have the following problem.

In our company IP addresses are bound to MAC addresses, I already registered a new IP address with a VMWAre friendly (00:50:56:xx) Mac address in our IT department.

But when I use this IP address in the static helper VM setting in the Converter Standalone I am missing the information to enter a Mac address.

It seems to me that the Converter is trying to create this helper VM with a random Mac address but and I don't have control over that so that the logfile says "connect failed to <IP address>".

I am pretty sure that if I could assign this mac address to the helper vm the converter could access this machine in our network.

Is there a hidden option or some trick to define a mac address for the helper VM?
