VMWare Converter - VSS cannot be stored because there is not enough space on source volume

Hey guys,

This question probably been asked a few times and I probably did read them all but none provided an answer that could fix the problem I have. I'm trying to virtualize a physical machine. That machine has 2 partitions with Windows 7 on it. One has the system reserved partition with the boot information and the other (C drive) has the OS on it. I don't seem to be able to add space to the system drive (option greyed out) even if I have unallocated space. I also tried to convert the machine without the sys partition thinking I could just create if afterwards but that provided to be undoable so far (tried quite a couple things following multiple threads).

So, how can you convert a machine with all the required partitions knowing that VSS seems to require more space than is available on the sys partition?

Results:

Fails at 1% with "Failed: The VSS snapshots cannot be stored because there is not enough space on the source volumes or because the source machine does not have any NTFS volumes. Error code: 2147754783 (0x8004231F).   <-- Note here that the 2 partitions are in NTFS not FAT.

Conversion failed when trying to convert local machine

Hello,

I've just installed the vCenter Converter, as I want to try creating a virtual machine from my PC, so that when I get a new machine, I can have access to the old one, at least via a virtual machine.

To try it out, I installed it on my lap top, and tried to convert it. When it started the conversion, it got as far as 1%, and then failed with the message "FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'converter.fault.FileIOFault'" I'm not sure why this is, as I was trying to save the file(s) to a hard disk that's working fine. Please see the following screenshot...

Rosie.png

I can't see any way to edit the job, so the only thing I could do was to create anew job and try again. However, if I try this, I get the same problem.

Anyone any ideas what's going on? I can't do a thing here.

Windows 7 Hyper-V machine to VMWare question

Hi All,

I am trying to convert a Windows 7 Hyper-V machine to VMware. I installed Converter 5.1 on the source machine and converted it successfully.

On boot, I am getting a BSOD 7B error. I have researched and troubleshooted this error greatly and found that it can be fixed using the following instructions:

  1. Click Start> Run, type regedit, and click OK. The Registry Editor window opens.
  2. In the Registry Editor, select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  3. Select File> Load Hive.
  4. Navigate to the drive on which Windows is installed (usually C:\).
  5. Open the file named SYSTEM located at Windows/system32/config.
  6. Name the file as P2V, when prompted.
  7. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\P2V\ControlSet001\services\LSI_SAS.
  8. Right-click the Start key and click Modify.
  9. Set the Value data to REG_DWORD 0.
  10. Close the Registry Editor.
  11. Restart the virtual machine.

The LSI_SAS and LSI_SAS2 start keys were already set to 0 in my case. This did not help. I found some other articles stating that the following:

Aliide = 3

Amdide =3

Atapi = 0

Cmdide = 3

iaStorV = 3

intelide = 0

msahci = 3

pciide = 3

viaide = 3

I've set these, and still no luck. I even tried importing the LSI_SAS registry key from a working Windows 7 virtual image and no luck. I also tried copying the lsi_sas.sys driver from the working Windows 7 machine to the problematic one and no luck.

Is there anything else I can try at this point?

Dear VMware,

When i want to convert my physical machine Debian 7 Linux to a version 9 virtual machine on a ESXi 5.5.0 environment i get a error message.

I'm using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone version 6.1.1. The Debian 7 Linux machine uses a GTP partition table, but that should be supported...

The error message:

The destination does not support EFI firmare.

However when i use version 10 everything is fine until 3% and than it gives an error too regarding efi.

Thank you for time.

Best regards,

Rens

New to VCenter Converter

Hello:

We have a software package that runs in Windows .NET.  We would like for our customers to be able to use VMWare to run our software on Linux or Mac.

Are there any tutorials on how to do this and what licensing would be needed to run Windows as the guest OS on the host system?

I'm not even sure if VCenter Converter is what I want to use so I'm a complete noob when it comes to VMWare development.

Thank you for any help you can provide!!!

Good afternoon, I have been trying to convert 2 servers for about a week now. They are running Redhat 5.5. I have been running into all sort of issues. In the beginning the servers would not query and i got passed that but now i have been stuck with this message since yesterday. I have looked at the Forums and I still have not moved anywhere. All I am trying to do is convert 2 old servers to my new esxi server.  Please help!! The converter gets to about 3 percent and then Fails.

I will attach my log if that will help.

An error occurred during the conversion

I'm in the process of moving a few virtual machines from Virtual Box to VMWare ESXi.  I was able to successfully convert 3 VMs out of 4 using the VMWare Converter Standalone.  VM is running Ubuntu 14.10.

The last VM, however, is giving me all kinds of issues.  Conversion starts fine and then fails anywhere between 25% and 70% with the following error:

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: '/usr/lib/vmware-converter/copyFileSystem.sh: line 125: 1917 Done echo <password> 1918 Done(141) | /usr/lib/vmware-converter/bin/ssh -z -F /usr/lib/vmware-converter/ssh.conf <user@ip.address> -p 22 "sudo tar --one-file-system --sparse -C '/' -cf - ." 1919 Killed | /bin/tar_1.28 --numeric-owner --delay-directory-restore -C '/mnt/p2v-src-root/' -y -xf - /usr/lib/vmware-converter/bin/ssh -z -F /usr/lib/vmware-converter/ssh.conf <user@ip.address> -p 22 "sudo tar --one-file-system --sparse -C '/' -cf - ." | /bin/tar_1.28 --numeric-owner --delay-directory-restore -C '/mnt/p2v-src-root/' -y -xf - (return code 137)'

From Log Hightlights:

8/3/2016 5:35:51 PM Error: unable to clone the volume mounted on '/' from '<ip address>'

I've tried few things to try and figure out what was causing the issue:

  • ran disk check to make sure there are no errors
  • stopped Atlassian services that run on this VM
  • tried converting to a different VMWare host
  • tried changing the partition sizes in converter
  • Reinstalled VMWare Converter
  • tried running VMware Converter from another machine
  • made sure no network drives/shares are connected

Any help would be much appreciated.

VHD file to VMDK

I have been told that I can not use vCenter Converter or the Standalone Converter to convert a VHD file to vmdk.  file to use to create a VM on vCenter ESXi host.  Is that correct?   I thought that this was possible or is it only possible directly from a running hyper-V virtual machine?

A general system error has occurred: unknown internal error.

I am having some problems with my Windows 10 VM.  I'm trying to expand the size of the VM but can't because of a weird partition from the Boot Camp conversion I had on my Mac.  For more details on that, you can see this post in the Fusion forum:

Virtual disk size incorrect

They suggested using VMWare VCenter Converter Standalone and deselect that partition when doing so.  Everything seems to work fine until the end when I get this error:

A general system error has occurred: unknown internal error.

I've attached a screenshot showing the partitions I can choose to convert as well as some diagnostic logs.  Can anyone help me figure out how to get this working?

Trouble converting physical Windows 10 machine to VM using standalone converter

$

Can't convert Win 10 laptop to VM using Standalone converter 6.x. Goal is to run in Fusion 8.x.

I converted ONLY the C drive. I dropped three other devices (including the recovery drive, D). The other two devices had unreadable labels. One was marked "Active" but I ignored it. Neither of the unreadable ones showed up in diskpart.exe.

Ran until 98% completed and then can't finish. Will try running with active partition also selected, but pretty sure that throws a VSS error before it ever gets to 2% completed.

Log and screen capture are attached.
