P2V Linux server using Converter 5.5

$

Hi,

I'm using VMware Converter 5.5 standalone to P2V one of our Linux servers. I found the running Converter off the vCenter server gave me the error: permission to perform this operation was denied. I used the Linux servers root credentials and ran Converter as Administrator but this didn't work. My colleague has a converter client on his PC which he ran and was able to run a P2V. We both have administrative access to vCenter but when he ran the client off his PC without connecting to vCenter, he was able to proceed with the P2V. Slightly odd... Any ideas?

Cheers,

Bob

Maximum concurrent tasks unavailable in Windows

Hi,

the option "Maximum concurrent tasks" in vCenter Converter Standalone is unavailable (greyed out).

The OS is Windows 7 64-bit.

There is no difference in running the application as user or with administrative rights, the option is always unavailable.

How can I change the number of maximum concurrent tasks to 1?

I did not find either any relevant configuration file or registry key.

Thanks and regards

Cordialement

Hi everybody,

I ran across this infamous error now on my machine. I tried several other suggestions from other posts with no luck. I am trying to convert a powered off VMware Infrastructure machine (template) into a Workstation image. I get this error immediately after I select the template as the source and click next.

Any hints? I even tried to reinstall Converter (5.5) completely...

Running into this error when trying to run the converter locally. This error is received at 1% when running the converter.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'll note the environment details and troubleshooting steps taken.

I was unable to modify the following registry key from REG_SZ to Reg_Expand_SZ  (per     Problem in VMWARE P2V Conversion of Windows Server 2003 )

  • I tried by renaming the current TypeLib (REG_SZ) and creating a new TypeLib with Reg_Expand_SZ, but changing it doesn't seem to resolve the issue, and it changes back after a reboot.

Linux P2V fails with fingerprint verification

$

Hi everybody!

I have a problem with VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5.

I would like to P2V a SLES 11 Linux, but get an error: A general system error occured: <source_server_dns_name>: Connection closed by remote host # <source_server_dns_name> SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.1 The authenticity of host <source_server_dns_name> can't be established. Host key fingerprint <source_server_key_fingerprint> verification failed. (return code 1)

In this enviroment:

Converter version: 5.5.1 and 5.5.2 (on Windows Server 2012 R2)

Source server: SLES 11 (physical) and CentOS 6

Destaniation server: vSphere 5.5

All server (converter, source, destination, vcenter) are in same network.

Firewall disabled

Source servers with DSA and RSA key

Source servers with SSH 2

Helper VM with fix IP settings

I configure the Convert XML files, that doesn't use SSL and Helper VM parameter: useSourcePasswordInHelperVm & powerOffHelperVm.

If login to the Helper VM by console, I see, that can connect to source server with SSH, but get the usual question:

"The authenticity of host '<source_server_dns_name>' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is <source_server_key_fingerprint>. Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?"

In the source server log seems the Helper VM try to connect (Accepted keyboard-interactive/pam for root from <Helper_VM_IP_address> port 55602 ssh), but in waiting state.

If I convert with VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1, there is no problem.

So I have a workaround (convert with 4.0.1 to workstation format, than convert with 5.5.x to ESXi 5.5), but the SLES have big data and I wouldn't like convert two times and I haven't extra storage capacity for the Workstation format.

I didn't find any solution.

Any ideas?

P2V sync after post conversion cleanup

$

Hello,

I have been pretty successful with P2V's using converter by following this process.

1) perform P2V

2) power on VM (with network disconnected), install vmware tools, assign static IP, remove vendor software/hardware (missing nics, raid controller, raid management, etc)

3) power off physical and turn on network for virtual

My question is regarding using the sync function. If I P2V a machine and not perform final sync, what happens to the new VM, if I do all the steps in option #2 above, and then sync changes afterwards? I'll give an example of why I'm asking this. I perform a P2V at 8pm, do all my cleanup that I mention in #2, and then shut off the VM. The following morning, the app owner comes in, performs a sync of the P2V, shuts down physical, and then turns on VM.

I guess what I'm asking is, if that happens, will any of the cleanup work that I did the night before be lost, or cause issues with the sync?

I typically have the app owner readily available to test the P2V right away, not the next morning/afternoon

Thanks

Mark

Offline/Cold P2V?

With converter 5.5, is there a way to do any type of offline P2V? like to create a bootable CD/DVD and boot the system with it to perform a P2V?

The P2V will be of different OS from Windows 2000 - Windows 2008R2

I need to convert an old Windows 98 box to a VM.

Can anybody please suggest the best solution?

Can I use VMware Converter 5.5 or should I use an older version?

If so, where can I locate VMware Converter 3.x or VMware Converter 4.x?

Once created the VM, can I use it on an ESXi host or should I use VMware Player or VMware workstation?

I'm trying to P2V a Windows 7 64 Bit HP8460p. I've followed various advice; running as admin, turning off UAC, decrypted the hard drive, etc, and I still get the 'Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible' error.

I'm sure I'm missing something stupid. I've attached the logs; any help would be greatly appreciated.

Conversion succeeds but unly shows black screen with cursor (not blinking)

Hi guys,

Really going a little desperate here.

I have here 1 Server 2003R2 EN edition running SQL 2005 instance (1 database).

Trying to convert to VM running on ESXi 5.5.0 1623387 using 5.5 standalone converter and also the 5,1 converter.

Hardware raid, normal basic disks (C: 60GB / D: 140GB).

stopped the SQL database, ran as local administrator, used SSL and no-SSL during copy (for speed).

Made sure I had LSI logical controller.

The convertion fails at 98% with "error: Cannot open the destination virtual machine for reconfiguration"

After that I can run the task "reconfiguration" seperately and it will tell me it has succeeded on the VM.

But in both cases I only get a black screen with a solid cursor.

Weird thing is, I dont even get the BIOS when I tell ESXi that I would like to see the BIOS after the next reboot. I go straight to black screen with cursor.

I also tried ONLY converting the C: but that resulted in the same issue,

Enclosed are the 2 log files from trying to convert (using 5.5 and 5.1).

I dont really know how to read them since I see a lot of "failed" and "error" remarks.

Appreciate the help.
