I am trying to P2V of Linux RHEL 5 running with SAN boot . But getting an error " Unable to create Virtual machine ".How to fix this issue and how to complete P2V .please suggest .
(Converter standalone 5.5 , vCenter is 5.5 ,Host is 5.5 versions .)

I'm having an issue with the converter, 5.5.1, which I have used successfully in the past (I upgraded it from 5.5.0 to see if that fixed anything, but it didn't).
I have 9 Windows Servers, so this is not a large installation. When I select one of my VMs to copy (it is turned off) named CMSP2013 as the source and copy it to a different datasource, I always end up with a copy of another VM (Win2012R2SysPrep). If I select CMSP2013 and click the link "View source details..." it shows the data for the Win2012R2SysPrep machine, or some other unknown Name. If I perform the copy, I end up with a brand new machine, instead of a copy of the one I was attempting to move to a new SSD datasource.
Why would the Standalone Converter be attempting to copy the incorrect VM? Has anyone else seen this behavior? This has been so simple in the past and I can't get past this issue.
I've even cracked open the VMX file to see if there's something weird in it, but I done see anything. It's as if a pointer is messed up somewhere. However, if I fire up each of the two VMs, they are completely different and operate correctly.
Any ideas of what's going on in my virtualized world?

I am trying to do a p2v conversion using the converter api. when i provide the datastore name and host name .. and try converting a get the below error saying datastore esxi03 is not found. but when i login into vcenter and check the host for datastores i can see the datastore esxi03 present and accessible. and also when i try to create manually instead of through api the UI gives me the option for esxi03 datastore. any ideas what might be the issue

Hi all,
I'm trying the P2V conversion of Powered-on Windows XP.
The conversion job was finished with status "completely".
However, after that, when I try to power on the target Win XP machine on ESXi, the machine displays its blue screen and does not boot.
If there is a way to solve this problem, would you please let me know?

I chose the option of vmware tools installation in the conversion steps with VMware Converer Standalone.
However, it was not installed in the target Win XP machine on ESXi.

In this Windows XP P2V conversion, I can always find a certain warning about sysprep file in converter wizard.
The warning is "Unable to locate the required Sysprep files."
Due to the termination of the period of Windows XP support by Microsoft, I can't do nothing about this warning.
We are using vcenter converter (5.0 & 5.1).
We want to converter our Linux Machine (CentOS) into VM. vCenter Converter Standalone is installed on Windows Server.
After providing all the credential on source & destination, we face the issue in drives. We not able to view 500GB LUN which is assigned to Linux Machine. All the local drives we able to view.
Any way to view 500 GB LUN.

I'm attempting to convert a aging laptop to a VM but it fails at 1% with the vague error "An error occurred during the conversion: 'converter.fault.ConverterFileFault"
With VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client 5.5.1 build 1682692 running locally converting the currently running machine.
On a laptop with WinXP Sp3, with a single drive, saving the VM to an attached USB harddrive.
I have run chkdsk on the drive. (with /F option) and defragmented
Shadow copy services have been restarted and are running.
This is with the latest Converter client,
No firewall is active.
I am logged in as administrator
Drive isn't encrypted as far as I can tell (no Truecrypt)
The xp included backup utility works
I have looked at the other issues/logs here but don't see the exact same one
I had a failing server and it was decided it needed to be moved to another server. I used the Converter standalone tool to clone a duplicate machine. Everything seemed to work fine, the physical box powered down after cloning, the synchronization completed and I started my new virtual server as a duplicate of the physical. However it started up in DHCP mode rather than taking on the address of the existing device. I went in to change the IP of the only adapter listed and got the message about the hidden nic. I found article KB1179 and tried to use the set device option - but never saw a dimmed nic (which now from reading the threads - see I should have done it all fro cli). So I tried the 2nd option of downloading the DevCon tool from Microsoft.
When I ran it, sure enough a pci device that was the ghost device was listed and it said it was removed and needed to be rebooted. Upon rebooting, again my box went into DHCP mode and when I went to change the IP address off the only NIC listed I got the hidden nic message again. The connectivity to this new server is so choppy - it pings at <1ms for about 20-50 pings then it his 900ms to 2000ms then back to <1 for another 20-50 pings. I don't know which is worse the physical server that kept crashing every 4-6 days for hardware problem or the new server that is so sluggish

Do I need all these devices? Why does the ghost/hidden nic is come back?
Hi all
Now I want to convert a remote Windows machine to ESXi.
However, I can't progress my conversion because of an error occurring.
The error message is "fault.AgentInstallFault.summary".
On the source machine, a VMware vCenter Standalone agent seem to be already installed.
I think it is because I tried to convert it a few weeks ago.
Today, I tried to uninstall it manually(through Control panel) from the source machine, but I couldn't.
When I tried to uninstall the agent, an error "Cannot stop services" and a message were displayed.
The meaning of the message is in the uninstall process, an critical error occurred.
I rebooted the source windows machine, however, the same errors occurred.
If you know how to solve this problem,could you tell me about it?

Hello all,
Hoping someone can shed some light on this. I am doing a P2V on a physical server located at site A and the destination ESXi host is also at site A. However, the "destination" field in the VMware converter has to be the vCenter server which is at Site B (over a 6Mb WAN connection) as the destination host is managed by a vCenter server. My question is if I use the vCenter server (located over a WAN connection) as the destination and then pick the host located at the local site in the Converter, will Converter traffic flow over the WAN? Or will it just flow locally from the Source to the Destination and just use the vCenter server as a "authentication" type server for initial setup?

1. Is there any way to convert physical disk using disk-based cloned for physical servers?
2. Do we really need to customise the OS, like providing license, rejoin the computer ?
3. Finally I have totally fragmented files 32% ( c volume) in physical disk, I told support team to run chkdsk however i want to understand, during P2V conversion,Do you really think 32% fragmented volume will really kill Conversion tasks?
I am running Standalone Converter 5.5.1 on an HP Windows 8 machine. I attempt to connect to a Toshiba Network running Windows 7 Starter. I try connecting with a username/password combo that has Administrative privileges. When the Standalone Converter wizard attempts to install the agent of the source machine the following error message is returned:
"Insufficient Privileges to connect to '198.162.1.85\ADMIN$'.
I've stepped through the guides and ensured the firewalls are off and simple file sharing is off. I've checked forums/communities and can't find this exact issue discussed.
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

I uses the newest version of VMware Converter, and got this error:
An error occurred while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts
I can reach the host from the source server on ports 443 and 902.
I have also tried to dettach an host and attach it again, to be sure that I accept the thumbprint.
But I still gets this error.
Is there anyone that knows what I can do to fix this?
We recently performed a P2V operation of a physical Window 2003 server that supports SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM). After the P2v operation all our servers that are being monitored by SolarWinds NPM had to have their SNMP service restarted so that monitoring by Solarwinds NPM could be restored. All regained monitoring. However, shortly after this, our Web Servers being monitored by SolarWinds started alerting that their w3wp.exe Monitor - SNMP process and inetinfo.exe Monitor -SNMP process were stopped. This occurred daily and at frequency intervals of about an hour (the process would stop and start on its own). Restarting the SNMP service has temporarily resolved the alerts but they do come back after awhile.
Our customer who maintains the Web applications on these servers says that the servers are doing fine but the alerts keep coming. They contend it must be because of the P2V operation. Solarwinds was consulted and they have reviewed each server. They contend that it is not with their application nor do they believe it is/was caused by the P2v.
Since these alerts did not occur prior to the P2v, I am not totally convinced that something did NOT occur as a result of the server virtualization. Has anyone seen this sort of event with their Web Servers?

since the last infrastructure update to 5.5 (latest available) the Converter is not working anymore. When starting a conversion it hangs in "Retrieving source machine information" and CPU is eating 25% on "System" Task.
Had anyone similar problems and get them solved?

Edit: The converter can be aborted and closed, but the "System" windows task is still eating 25% CPU, windows cannot reboot without hard reset.

Converter Standalone 5.5. Trying to convert SLES 11, but on 91% (tried twice) it stops with "FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion". Error message line is long and includes some files "Cannot open: No such file or directory" and then "Error exit delayed from previous errors (return code 2)".
Any ideas?

After P2V conversion of Centos 5.0, VM activities like Power On, Edit configuration, Power Off etc... takes longer time to complete.
The conversion was done using vmware converter 5.01.
But the VM performance is not much impacted.

I am using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5. I am trying to convert 2003 Server and getting the following error:
Failed: A general system error occurred: Platform-specific error 1.
I already looked into DNS and I its checks out fine. Besides DNS I could not find any other articles online. I am attaching logs. Maybe someone can figure out what I am missing.

I have installed the above on a windows XP machine. Write the vmx files to a NAS unit. It gets to 98% and then fails. Looking through other discussions on the site, I tried just configuring the VM that is on the NAS. Result is Error: cannot open the destination virtual machine for reconfiguration.
On a windows 7 machine, I have VMware Player installed. Try opening in this. Play virtual machine. I get a warning about performance as the disk file is on a remote drive. Continue. Then "Error loading operating system".
So is what I am trying to do possible ie my old PC windows XP running under a VMPlayer as a VM?
