For beginning, I'm sorry for my poor english.

I need to convert a physical server to a virtual machine. But I can't because I have always this error : 'Unable to query the live source machine."

I had already convert two physical servers in a same LAN with the same VMWare convertor with success.

I have check all step on VMware Knowledge Base,

1. I can sign in with root on the physical machine.

2. I can connect the physical machine from Windows 10 which content VMWare convertor with putty.

3. I checked '.bashrc' on '/root' folder and there isn't line beginning by echo command.

4. Root user can sign in and passwd file is ok.

5. 'tmp' folder isn't a partition but I can create folder and file on this folder and right is :

ls -lisa /tmp/

1177346    4 drwxrwxrwt 23 root    root       4096 Jul 21 20:38 .

I run VMware convertun such as administrator. You can't find log of my VMware convertor in attachment.

failed - number of virtual devices exceeds the maximum for a given controller

This error occurs when I select the Synchronize option. Any Help?

Trying P2V Windows Server 2008 R2 to ESXI 6.5.0

I receive the following error when trying to start a p2v conversion on the powered-on machine that is being converted and saving to network share. Error happens immediately after wizard closes.

The converter software is able to get to the share and write, as I tested it by saving the log files from the converter to the share so it does not appear to be a rights issue.

I was attempting to convert a ubuntu device into a virtual machine using Converter 6.2.

Unfortunately it did not see my (definitely existing) boot partition, and after sifting through the worker logs the following line leads me to believe nvme source disks are not supported:

Im trying to migrate a VM using Converter 5.1 but I get the "Permission to perform this operation was denied" error message when i select the source machine (which is powered off) or when i click on the "view source details..."

I see the following error in the Convertor Standalone client log file "[05496 error 'wizardController'] Must be administrator to access physical computer"

The domain account I am using is a member of the Local Users group on the Convertor server and has Converter permissions on the source vCenter where the VM is.

Any ideas as to why I get this error?

Message was edited by: GuyTC : corrected errors in original question. It turns out my domain account was NOT a member of the Local Administrators group on the Converter server. Adding my domain account to the Local Admins group on the Converter server fixed the error.

I am trying desperately to convert an old Server 2003 R2 32-bit system to a VM.  The OS is currently installed on an old Dell PowerEdge server (bare metal install not currently a VM) which is aged out and starting to cause problems.  The server had two drives configured with RAID-1.  I have tried the conversion numerous times using VMware vCenter Converter 6.2, but all attempts fail with the error message: FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.  Can anyone tell me how to diagnose this?  I have attached the log files as well.

I have read many of this posts on this subject, however, I am fairly new to VMs.

I have 2 file servers to convert. 1 is Win 2008 R2, one is Win 2012 R2. I've been asked to estimate the amount of time it will take to convert, and i have no way how to do that. I have the sizes of the machines to convert (1 is 500G, the other is a bit over 600G).

How would I make such an estimate? The standalone converted is block-based, right? Has nothing to do with the number or size of files on the servers, only the total size of the disks.

Each server would have 2x1G Ethernet NICs, teamed.

Anyone have any pointers on how to make such an estimate? 4 hours?

Converter v6.2, destination ESXi 5.5 U3b. ESXi has 2x10G NICs for VM traffic.

I find out this article but seems it is different in my case.

Someone said the error code mean "There is not enough space on the disk." but i give each volume more 50GB

I am having a dual boot setup with both having  Windows XP. I have the 1st Win XP on C drive and the 2nd Win XP on the E drive. I want to create an virtual image of the physical 2nd Win XP on the E drive.

My questions is :

(1) Can I install and run the Vmware convertor from inside of the 1st windows xp on C drive and use it to create a physical to virtual image of the 2nd Win XP on the E drive and save it on a separate partition lets say D drive.  Thus I want to convert the XP install on E drive , while running the VMware converter from within the 1st Win XP installation.(This not being a Live cloning as I have booted into the other OS)

(2) Also while using the virtual Image created with the above method, can I use this Image while running the Vmware player from inside both the Windows xp installations on C drive and E drive. What I mean here is can I run the virtual Image of the E drive using either of the Xp installations on C and E drives.

I trying to retire an ESX 5.5 machine, so need to copy off the VMs.  When starting the VMware Converter wizard, I enter the source ESX server IP address, username and password.  On the next screen, I select the VM, and click next.  I then get the error "Unable to obtain the lock on virtual disks".

VMWare converter 6.2.0 builds 7348398 and 8466193.

I'm trying to copy a 20gb, thin provisioned (currently 8gb) linux VM from ESX 5.5.0 2068190 to ESX 6.5.0 Update 1 (Build 5969303).  These ESX installations are standalone, use local disks (so no NFS/SCSI luns etc.), and are Dell servers (R510 to R720), with all stock components.  The only things we have changed on both ESX is the IP address and autostart.

Copying all other VMs on the ESX 5.5 works fine using exactly the same process, same source disk to destination, at the same time.  When other VM's finished copying and were removed, this still didn't work.  These VMs were all cloned from a master VM, which was also copied across.

I have tried:

• Properly starting and shutting down the VM multiple times.  When running, the VM functions properly.
• Checked any existence of lock files in the VM's directory when shutdown - none.
• Ran chmod 777 for all files in VM's directory and the directory itself (other posts with this error suggested permissions on NFS - thought it was worth a shot even though this is not NFS)
• Restarted the ESX 5.5 machine, no joy

I can manually copy of the files with no issues, so may have to live with an inflated thin provision disk (or fix it manually), but would be nice to know what this is and why it's only this single machine.  Google and here are not any real help that I can see.

不知道有沒有人遇過相同的問題可以指點一下是哪裡有問題?

There are two ways to run p2v conventer.

A. install p2v at the server that I want to convert and select local machine as an option.

B. install p2v at a desktop and select remote machine as an option.

I wonder which one runs faster and reliable. Can someone advise?

Also if I convert dc, do I need to turn off any services? or shall I just make sure to power off the physical dc as soon as the convention finish? Any advice on this?
