The virtual disk is invalid or needs to be repaired AND vmware-vdiskmanager does NOT fix the problem

I'm running vmware-vdiskmanager -R against a VMDK file that produces "the virtual disk is invalid or needs to be repaired" errors in VCenter Converter.  vmware-vdiskmanager does NOT report anything; it just silently returns to the command prompt after a second or two and does not fix the problem.

vdisk-vdiskmanager -e reports: Disk chain is consistent.

Now what?  What to do when vmware-vdiskmanager -R does not fix the problem?

How can I convert a virtual machine to a virtual machine?

Cannot restart syncronization after P2V

I've P2Ved a server using Converter 6.2, scheduling syncronization after finish and on a specific time of the day. After all the operations finished, I'v tried to "force" a manual syncronization but probably in the wrong way (I just entered the job settings and changed from "schedule" to "manual"). The sync run and ended normally. Now I need to re-run it, but I'm unable to edit that job (it looks "inactive" and the voice "syncronize" is grayed). I can only reP2V all the machine from zero! Is it possible?

Is there a shortcut to re-run a sync job without recreate a brand new VM?

Converter for Linux

Hello All,

I am trying to convert a Physical Linux machine to a VMWare Workstation VM.

It appears there is no Linux version of the converter in order to select "This Local Machine" as source... So I downloaded this onto windows box. But, when selecting Remote Machine as the source, my only option as a destination is a ESXi vSphere server. If you choose local machine you can select a external HDD, but not for remote linux machine.??

I saw just searching online that there used to be a VMWare Converter 4.0 for Linux, which was a tar file. Is there anyway to still get this older installer for Linux? Found here: https://linhost.info/2009/04/vmware-converter-installation-on-ubuntu-linux/

Or is there anyway to convert a remote physical linux machine to an External HDD..?

What are my options?

Thanks in Advance,

Matt

How to specify the library ( /lib ) path vCenter Converter Standalone uses to convert a Linux machine

$

After some updates to our Linux Debian server we tried to virtualize it with vCenter Converter Standalone. Before the update this process worked multiple times, but now we got a "Unable to reconfigure the destination virtual machine." error. I'll paste the more specific message at the end of the post. After reading the error log and doing some research I came to the conclusion that the converter needs to find some modules in /lib folder and the update moved the files from /lib to /lib/i386-linux-gnu.

How do I tell the converter that those files exist in different folder?

Here is the error:

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to convert CentOS 6 VM from Xen 6 to vCenter 5.5 by VMware Converter Standalone 6.2

Everything is ok but the percentage is always 1%. When I opened the log, I got an error:

"error: class Vmacore::Ssl::SSLHandshakeTimeoutException(SSL Exception: Operation was canceled)"

After I try to increase SSLHandshakeTimeout in /etc/vmware/hosts/config.xml and /etc/vmware/rhttpproxy/config/xml from default 20000 miliseconds to 120000 miliseconds, the error is still happened. Somebody help me to fix this error, please!

My log file is attached below

Thank everyone!

Convert vSphere 6.0 VM to vSphere 6.5 ?

$

Hi,

We are going to migrate our vSphere infrastructure to a new platform.  We intend to make use of this opportunity to upgrade vSphere 6.0 to vSphere 6.5.

Consultant suggests us to make use of VMware Convertor to migrate VM from the old Data Centre to the new one.

Just wonder whether there is any change we need to work on the VM after migrated via VMware Convertor ?  What will be the bottle neck for conversion (Network / CPU of the machine running VMware Converter or CPU of the destination ESXi Host) ?  How many VM we can convert at the same time (It seems to be 4) ?

Thanks

I press the spacebar several times to get to the grub menu. Then the start of the vm is happening normally.

I'm using vCenter server 5.5.0 build 2183111

Where can this error come from?

Hi,

I use vcbmounter script to backup all my vm's, Windows and Solaris. When I use VMware converter on little VM, (-+25G) everything is fine, but when I want to do a full VM restore with a Huge VM I get a failed. Also I restore on a giggy ethernet and it takes lots of time to restore. Even if the virtuals disks are empty. I upgraded to the last version of Converter (3.03) and still the same issues. Anyone came across those problemes? Any other way of restoring a full VM is velcome.

Thank you

bug cloning P2V using Converter 6.2

When proceeding to cloning a Linux server, we identify an erratic behavior The OS version that was involve in this process was a RHEL 6.4 (Santiago), running on a physical server.

As the official VMWare documentation explain, when you proceed to virtualize a Linux system, the process has to create a VM called Helper, into the virtual environment.

During this process, we sniffing the communication, to understand ports and the whole connections required during these task, detect that the process started with the communication through the SSH protocol, between the physical RHEL and the Converter, and through port 443, between the Converter and the hypervisor side.

When the conversion process reaches the step to build the helper vm, the communication stops.

We proceeded to analyze the different logs/registers, and detected, that the build of vm helper never ended correctly, if we wanted to use a specific network in our virtual environment, which had different vlans tags, defined.

In the other hand, we have made, countless succeed P2V conversions in other networks before and the whole process finished in a successfully way

So, the next step was to identify the differences between this network configuration in our vSwitch and in our virtualization environment, with the rest of the networks in which we have made innumerable P2V conversions before.

The difference that appeared between this network and others that were configured in the virtual environment was that it had several vlans tags. Having identified this, we could understand that the problem was that the converter, which could not tag these vlans.

In other words, this was the root cause, and why the converter could not finish the construction of the virtual Helper machine in our virtual environment.

How Do I Install VMware-Converter in Ubuntu 18.04-LTS

Hello.  I am trying to install VMware Converter in Ubuntu 18.04-LTS.  I have no idea how to do this.  Install documentation for the operating system or just linux in general is virtually non-existent.  I read the current documentation and looks like I can only install this latest version in Windows, however there is an open source download available.  Can someone please help?  I downloaded the latest file.  The name of the file is VMware-converter-6.2.0-7348398.odp, of which I extracted all the way to VMware-converter-6.2.0-7348398.odp.tar, a tar file.  In general, I just want VMware Converter installed on my linux operating system.  Any help or guides\documentation would be appreciated.

P2V Linux centOS 7 to Vmware Esxi 6.7.0 using converter 6.2 fails at 3%

$

Hi all!

First, I would like to clarify that I'm new on VMware platform and sorry if I ask a question that has an easy resolution, but reading all threads and solutions I could not solve my issue.

I'm trying to convert a Linux centOS 7 physical machine to a virtual machine in a VMware Server Esxi 6.7.0. To perform this task I'm using vCenter Converter Standalone 6.2.0. I set all wizard options, job starts but at 3% it fails with error:

FAILED: A general system error occurred: connect (`10.240.107.11'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.240.107.11'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.240.107.11'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.240.107.11'):
Network is unreachable Network error. Host 10.240.107.11 key can't be retrieved. (return code 2)

I have performed some tips given in another discussions, such as:

– SSH configuration is allowing root to access the system remotely from port 22

# grep Root /etc/ssh/sshd_config

PermitRootLogin yes

# the setting of "PermitRootLogin without-password".

– IPtables allow connection on port 22

# iptables -L | grep ssh

ACCEPT     tcp  --  anywhere             anywhere             tcp dpt:ssh ctstate NEW

– You are running Converter version 5.5.1 or greater (there is a known issue with older version that aren’t supporting DSA keys)

As I said before, I'm using vCenter Converter Standalone 6.2.0

– Add ALL:ALL parameter to “hosts.allow” parameter.

# cat /etc/hosts.allow

#

# hosts.allow   This file contains access rules which are used to

#               allow or deny connections to network services that

#               either use the tcp_wrappers library or that have been

#               started through a tcp_wrappers-enabled xinetd.

#

#               See 'man 5 hosts_options' and 'man 5 hosts_access'

#               for information on rule syntax.

#               See 'man tcpd' for information on tcp_wrappers

ALL:ALL

– Check DNS suffix

I'm doing the process using ip addresses... I'm not using names.

- Check network configuration

Linux, VMware server and machine with Converter have the same ip range and same netmask

- I'm running Converter as Administrator
