I have been trying to virtualize my file server for a month now. Every time it fails at different points. Latest one fails at 97% because this is a file server changes are always being made. Will it be ok to start and run VM with this message. Is there a way to run the sync manually? I am running Windows Server 2008 32bit.

I have done a successful P2V test conversion from a Symantec System Recovery image. Although it completed successfully, vCenter told me that "Virtual machine disks consolidation is needed." When I go to look at the disks, for each physical drive there is a full size flat file, and four 1024 KB delta files. In the VMDK files, the delta disks appear completely orphaned - they only reference themselves (CID and parentCID are the same), and none of them reference each other or the original flat file.
I edited the VMX to point at the flat file, not the last delta, and the machine starts up perfectly. During the conversion process I used file-level copy, not block-level copy, as block-level would fail at 98%.
Any idea why these files are being created and if I can safely delete them?

I will be working on a customer's system from my office, so we've taken a copy of their Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery (ver 8.5) files and I'm trying to put them through the VMware Standalone Converter, but I'm having some problems, so I'm hoping someone can help...
A little background, this is VMware vCenter Converter Standalone version 5.0.1 build 875114, running on 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise.
I have copied the BESR images to the local C: drive (hoping that would help).
Basically, I open the converter, click on "Convert Machine", selected source type "Backup image or third-party virtual machine" and browsed to the .sv2i file from the backup.
If I click Next, or click "View Source Details..." then I get the error "The source parameters are invalid" across the GUI.
That's it...
So, it appears that the converter doesn't like the .sv2i file.
Unfortunately, there's nothing which tells me what the problem is and I can't see any way of making the logging any more useful.
Looking at "vmware-converter-worker-1.log" I see the following:

So, the sv2iparser thinks the .sv2i (XML) file has problems, but it's on the converter list of compatible products...
I've looked at the .sv2i file and my first thoughts were that the ImageFile entry was causing the problems - it was originally pointing to the original (customer's) backup folder as a UNC path (\\server\share\filename), so I changed that to a local path.
No change.
The next point I noticed was that the HistoryFile entry points to a file which only exists on the backup server, nothing that I have with the backup images... removing that made no difference.
Discussing with the customer, they're able to do convert this, so I'm presuming it's a fault with my system.

I have this old Windows 2000 Professional SP2 - and I cant upgrade to SP4 due to some
software incompatibility....

We are still using Vsphere 4.0 ( I know...) and will be upgrading soon.
My question however is that there is a machine that I need to convert. Can I use the latest converter 5.1 or do I need to use an earlier version?
Will the resultant VM be compatible with Vsphere 4.0?
If any more info is required I will gladly provide it.

The documentation says that Ubuntu Server 8.x, 9.x, and 10.x are supported. I have 11.04.
Isn't this tool uptodate? How can I create an image of a remote server? Its actually a OpenVZ image at a hosting company, but I have root access, and its powered on.

I have a Windows 2000 server running an network app that I no longer have the discs for. I need to migrate this onto our VM infrastructure. I believe it is not possible to convert a Windows 2000 server to a VM using the converter. Does anyone know of a way around this?

I am trying to convert an old DELL Inspiron Windows XP system to VM with no apparent success. Always stops at 98% with an error "Failed: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible".
Did all kinds of trials with Recovery Console - CHKDSK, FIXMBR, FIXBOOT.
The system boots to XP properly.
I am attaching log of the converter.

I'm trying to move a virtual machine from proxmox to ESXi.
The VM I'm trying to move with Converter is an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, but the Converter gives me the following message "Unable to detect disks or volumes on the source machine. Make sure that the source is a supported Linux distribution".
Does anyone knows how I can solve this? (It would also make me happy if anyone knows how I can convert .raw images to a vmware vm).
Got this message when attempting P2v of Windows 2003 SP2 server on Workgroup. Using the IP address and local administrator account to login to server and connecting to vCenter to add the VM to the host. The source server is on a workgroup and vCenter server reside in domain but I am able to ping from source to vCenter and source to vConverter server and vice-versa. So, does not appear to be a firewall issue nor port issue. My account exists on vCenter DataCenter as Administrator so I should have no issues with permissioning.
FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion:
'Platform-specific error 2338'
Message occurs at: Task: Convert physical machine.
One more note: The ESXi 5.0 host that I am trying to place the VM on has dual 10G uplinks set to Full while the physical server has a 1G NIC. It's still mismatch duplexing but don't know if this would be an issue here. Also, am using vCenter Converter standalone ver5.1 to vCenter 5.0 on ESXi 5.0 build 1117897. Standard vSwitch configuration.
Have tried to locate what this error means and thusfar am drawing a blank. Any assistance appreciated.

Hi, I have tried to convert a VPC 2007 VHD of a win2000 VM and it seems to convert OK with no errors.
But, as soon as I start the converted vm in VMPlayer I get an error message along the lines of "error in first line," or "error in line 1"
Sorry, I forgot to write it down and I am now at work.
Is there anything I can do to fix the conversion?

I am doing P2V of a Physical Linux Machine, its failing with error "FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'root is not found' " Can some one suggest how to fix this.. It is not taking root partition disk to copy not sure why its not taking it into account.
I have addressed this issue once before and thought the problem was that ports were not opened.
I am trying to use Converter Standalone from my Windows 7 domain computer to convert a physical windows 2003 server to VM. I am using IP addresses vs servernames and also using the local administrator account to login. As the conversion starts, it stops at 1% with the following message:
FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion:
'Platform-specific error 2338'
I have attached the agent, worker and server logs. I am not able to interpret them.
Error 2338 appears to be very generic and does not identify the real cause of the conversion failure. Can someone show me how to review the logs and identify what is causing this issue. I know the ports are open since the networking guys have opened all the ports to all our esxi hosts.

While converting a Server 2003 server to an ESX 3.5 server I received this message after 95% Complete. Error Reconfiguration failed. With a status of: FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.

Just installed Converter 5.0 on Windows 7 64bit machine. Want to virtualize the machine using only the C: volume.
Ran converter and immediately got this error when I selected the running machine as the source.

I don't understand why because others woorked fine. PC is on XP SP3 FR and she has a compress partition (my be at the origin of the failure).

We have Several Dell windows 2003 servers. I need to create a maintenance window (2
hours, 4 hours, or 8 hours) The storage drives are not very large, anywhere
from 20 GB to 200 GB. Most servers have
3 to 4 drives FC SAN.
