Hello,

I'm attempting to do a hot P2V linux.  I get coonected, machine creates new vm, boots but when asking for helper password it fails attempting to login with helper login, and password saying not found.   Then get message vmacore application loop.

Can anyone assist?

Where do i enter helper login/password

I'm using standalone app on windows.

RHEL 4 machine converted fine, but get kernel panic when I start the VM

So I have a bunch of old Red Hat 4 servers that I need to convert to VMs.   I am using the standalone converter 5.0 and the VMs range from Red Hat version 2.6.9.-11 to 2.6.9-42.   Some of the machines I can P2V with out any issues but a majority of them fail with

mount: error 6 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2 (see pic for more details)

error.jpg

So I get a 100% complete when I use the Converter but when I boot up the VM I get that error.   I have followed the directions from http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002402 but I still not having any luck.   I made changes to /etc/fstab, /boot/grub/grub.conf, /boot/grub/device.map etc...   I am also having issues with rebuilding the ramdisk.   I ran the command with the existing version on the drive but I get an error about about no modules found.   I have also found another article saying the version of TAR might be an issue so i've upgrade the version to 1.14-15 and re-ran converter and it still failing.   Anyone have any ideas what is wrong?    I am windows admin with some linux background so please go detailed on the linux commands.

Just want to ask has anyone here successfully P2Ved Windows Server 2012 before? Can share your experience?

"An error occurred during the conversion: 'Unknown exception'",

We're using Vcenter to P2V some of our servers. Most have worked, but the ones that fail, fail with a description that is not helpful at all.

mostRecentError = (converter.fault.CloneFault) {

--> dynamicType = <unset>,

--> faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null,

--> description = "Unknown exception",

--> msg = "An error occurred during the conversion: 'Unknown exception'",

--> },

--> numConsecutiveErrors = 1,

We're tried several different ways of cloning including matching the hardware, not thin provisioning, setting permissions, using a domain admin account and still we get this error.

has anyone else had this error and figured out a solution?

Thanks.

I converted many Physical Servers to our Vsphere ok but with this server, it said: "Error: An error occurred during reconfiguration." after transfered all data.

I attached the log file to this and hope someone can help me to resolve this.

Thanks.

Hello everyone!

I have a .PQI backup image. I created a VHD and restore the data from .PQI to that VHD using Norton Ghost 15.0. Then created a VM using that VHD as "Using Physical Disk". Then i used the converter to convert it, but unfortunately, I got this error "FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible" at 98%

SUSE with LVM doesn't boot

Hello everybody.

I have converted openSUSE 10.2 64-bit by Converter 5 Standalone. Type of coversion was by volumes.

The converter created 2 virtual disks. The first with /boot partition and the second with rest of volumes. At the and there was an error with the configuration of the virtual machine.

I repeated the conversion with the option "don't configurate". Then I booted VM to rescue, made chroot, mkinitrd but the volume group "system" was not recognized.

Where is the problem?

Thanks a lot.

VMWare Converter Standalone and static helper VM Mac address

$

Dear community,

First, thank you all for this wonderful community, it helped me a lot in the past answering my questions by browsing the forums!

I got the following problem. I want to convert a physical linux machine using the Converter Standalone 5.1.

Therefore I am trying to set up a static IP address for my helper VM machine but because I am within a enterprise network (which does not allow DHCP) I have the following problem.

In our company IP addresses are bound to MAC addresses, I already registered a new IP address with a VMWAre friendly (00:50:56:xx) Mac address in our IT department.

But when I use this IP address in the static helper VM setting in the Converter Standalone I am missing the information to enter a Mac address.

It seems to me that the Converter is trying to create this helper VM with a random Mac address but and I don't have control over that so that the logfile says "connect failed to <IP address>".

I am pretty sure that if I could assign this mac address to the helper vm the converter could access this machine in our network.

Is there a hidden option or some trick to define a mac address for the helper VM?

Thanks in advance for your help

vCenter Converter to import existing VM into ESXi "Certificate Warnings"

I recently setup a new ESXi host and I am trying to import a backup of a working domain controller into the VMware Server appliance but while running the converter I get these certificate errors

  • a certificate in the hosts chain does not have a valid signature
  • a certificate in the hosts chain is based on an untrusted root
  • other certificate trust error

I have the option to "Ignore" but choosing that does not help, it keeps giving me those errors. I can also check off "do not displayt security warnings" but that does not get me past this screen either. Can anyone help me out? the version is converter standalone 4.3.0

VMWare converter standalone fails at 1%.

Hello,

I am having problem converting some machines from one subnet to another. Since I am working in university, here is quite complex network infrastructure. Every time I need a port open, I have to register a call and wait for few days for it to be solved.

I have:

ESXi 5.1 on subnet A

PC which is on subnet A and is able to connect to subnet B through port 80, 445, 9089.

Some servers that are going to be migrated located in subnet B.

Now when I try to set a task with wmware converter standalone installed on PC to clone a physical host(win 2k3) from subnet B I get the failed status with error message: An error occurred during the conversion: 'Unknown exception'.

I found on this forum similar problem(P2V conversion fails at 1% , "An error occured during the conversion"Unknown exeption"") and rechecked my logs.

2013-08-01T11:11:06.719+02:00 [02020 warning 'Default'] [,0] [NFC ERROR] NfcNewAuthdConnectionEx: Failed to connect to peer. Error: Failed to connect to server 1.2.3.4:902(this is the IP of ESXi server)

the problem is kind of clear to me. Source machine is trying to connect directly to ESXi server and it's storage. But for me to register a "port opening" call for every server I want to convert is a bit inconvenient to say the least and I was wondering is it possible somehow to do migration through PC in A subnet which has access to powered on source machines and ESXi server. And those machines would not need to directly contact the ESXi server?

Thanks for your answers.

P2V Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine

Hi All!

I am (for the first time) trying to do a P2V conversion.

Target machine is a remotely located SBS2008.

I have installed the vCenter Converter Client 5.1 on my local laptop

I installed the agent (found in the installation directory on my laptop) on the remote server.

I opened the ports that i found on the vmware site in the remote sites firewall (8089, 139, 445, 9090, 137 and 138)

When i enter the connection details in the convertor i do receive the SSL Cert popup (so there is a connection established), but when i click "ignore" he just presents me: "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine"

I have been looking around for some howto's or additional info but had a hard time finding it ;-)

Thanks a lot for the feedback!

converter error "Host key can't be retrieved.

Hi all,

I'm having an issue using the standalone converter to p2v a linux (CentOS) box.  It gets to 1% then fails with the following error:

FAILED: A general system error occurred:

Network error. Host 10.0.2.19 key can't be retrieved. (return code 2)

(Note: 10.0.2.19 is the IP of the CentOS box.)

Running 5.01 build 1087880 of the converter (latest as of today), and ESXi 5.1.

Anyone ever come across this error before or know what it means?  Google isn't very helpful...

Thanks in advance,

Colin

BSOD on start up

$

Alright Guys,

I have been trying to set up a VM Image of an ex colleagues machine before the format and rebuild. I am using the VMWare Converter to create the image and the Oracle VMBox software to run the image.

I have set up multiple VM's previously with no issues. I have now gone through the settings hundreds of times in my head and i cannot spot any issues which is why this is making me want to SCREAM! (we have all been there)

The issues is the machine will not boot in VMBox. It gets to the windows 7 start up page and crashes every time resulting in the dreaded BSOD.

The only reason for it to fail that i can currently think of is the set up of the physical machine that has been imaged. It is set up in a RAID configuration, i believe RAID-0. Is anyone aware if this is going to make a difference? As far as i am aware if it is striping (RAID-0) then surely the converter should simply image it as a single hard drive and there should be no problems?

Any ideas would be hugely appreciated as this one has me stumped!!

Cheers.

Linux conversion failed with error : attempt to contact Helper service timed out

Hello all,

I would like to convert a Linux server to a VMware VM and always get the same error :

[00848 error 'task-12'] Received exception while trying to connect to helper at 10.158.19.22 port 443: attempt to contact Helper service timed out

I'm using Converter standalone 5.1.0.

Helper VM network is configured to obtain IP via DHCP (it works fine as I can see DHCP lease on my DHCP server)

But in the log I get plenty of these errors :

log extract

-->

--> * self signed certificate in certificate chain)

Troubles when trying to P2V Win 2003 SBS

Hi,

I'm trying to P2V a Windows Server 2003 SBS.

However i'm having some issues.

When i tried to convert the machine, it cloned the hard drives without any problems but when i started to reconfigure the machine it error'd at 98%

The machine popped up in my vSphere client and i tried to boot it. it caused a BSOD on startup.

After some reading i tried to reconfigure the machine from the vCenter converter but again i got an error.

I have seen some discussions in the community which seems to describe the same problem,

however none of them have a solution.

Kind Regards

Robin

P2V Ubuntu 10.04

Hi,

I am trying to P2V a couple of Ubuntu server using the Converter Standalone client 5.1.  I have tried to enable sudo to not use passwords, as described in the following KB article  VMware KB: Enabling the use of a non-root user for hot cloning of a Linux source machine

I have also tried to just enable the password for the root user per this posting.  Ubuntu 8.10 P2V sudo

All with no luck.  I have attached the worker log and the server log.  It looks like the ubutu server may be activly killing my connection.  Any thoughts?

Converting Windows Vista RAID source

The source machine is Windows Vista Ultimate x32 that is running RAID 0 for the C: drive using the Nvidia hardware controller.  I'm using Converter 5.1.

The error I get at the end of conversion is: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible.  I tried loading the VM using Workstation 9 but it appears to reboot over and over.

I looked through a number of messages here on the discussion board.  I don't have a boot.ini file on the C:.  It's not in the list of hidden or system files. Perhaps because I am using RAID it is located somewhere else?

I then went through the KB troubleshooting document found here VMware KB:    Troubleshooting checklist for VMware Converter.  That was helpful.  I suspect that this line is probably what is ultimately tripping up the conversion:

     24. Disable mirrored or striped volumes. Mirrored or striped volumes cannot be converted.

Does this mean that I have to break the mirror?  The system is showing signs of failure and I'm reluctant to make any changes that might tip it over the edge.

"Unable to Obtain Hardware information for the selected machine"

Summary:

I am trying to migrate two VMware virtual machines from Linux VMware server 2.01 to a VMware infrastructure install running VMWare ESXi 5.1.0.   When I try and use the Standalone converter to convert the VMware virtual machine to 5.1 I get the error "Unable to Obtain Hardware information for the selected machine".   I have followed the various suggestions on how to deal with this issue and am still Unable to import the machines.

More info:

I have a Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit) server and a  Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (32-bit) server VMWARE virtual Machine image I am trying to migrate.

To do this I shut the machines down and copied the entire machine folder from the Linux server to a Windows 2008 R2 enterprise machine.

I have then run the VMWARE standalone converter (by right clicking on it and running as administrator)

I have gone into "convert machine" and selected "VMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine"

I have gone and selected the vmx file from the machine I wish to import

Upon selecting "View Source Details" and or "next"  I get that error: "Unable to Obtain Hardware information for the selected machine"

I COULD run the Stand Alone importer on the machines however I would rather use the offline images.  The import process changes all the hardware and the change in hardware means reapplying the windows license keys.  Which means "what else is going on in the important software we use if windows is now thinking the hardware has changed THAT much?"
