Does V2V perform sysprep ?

Hi,

If we perform a V2V of an existing VM that is a Domain Member, will it run sysprep automatically ?

OR sysprep will only be run if we choose "Customize Guest Preferences for the Virtual Machine" ?

Besides, in what circumstance do we need to choose "Install VMware Tools on the Destination Virtual Machine" ?

Thanks

Can you please point me to the right direction?

An error occurred during the conversion

I'm in the process of moving a few virtual machines from Virtual Box to VMWare ESXi.  I was able to successfully convert 3 VMs out of 4 using the VMWare Converter Standalone.  VM is running Ubuntu 14.10.

The last VM, however, is giving me all kinds of issues.  Conversion starts fine and then fails anywhere between 25% and 70% with the following error:

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: '/usr/lib/vmware-converter/copyFileSystem.sh: line 125: 1917 Done echo <password> 1918 Done(141) | /usr/lib/vmware-converter/bin/ssh -z -F /usr/lib/vmware-converter/ssh.conf <user@ip.address> -p 22 "sudo tar --one-file-system --sparse -C '/' -cf - ." 1919 Killed | /bin/tar_1.28 --numeric-owner --delay-directory-restore -C '/mnt/p2v-src-root/' -y -xf - /usr/lib/vmware-converter/bin/ssh -z -F /usr/lib/vmware-converter/ssh.conf <user@ip.address> -p 22 "sudo tar --one-file-system --sparse -C '/' -cf - ." | /bin/tar_1.28 --numeric-owner --delay-directory-restore -C '/mnt/p2v-src-root/' -y -xf - (return code 137)'

From Log Hightlights:

8/3/2016 5:35:51 PM Error: unable to clone the volume mounted on '/' from '<ip address>'

I've tried few things to try and figure out what was causing the issue:

  • ran disk check to make sure there are no errors
  • stopped Atlassian services that run on this VM
  • tried converting to a different VMWare host
  • tried changing the partition sizes in converter
  • Reinstalled VMWare Converter
  • tried running VMware Converter from another machine
  • made sure no network drives/shares are connected

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

i try to convert a physical CentOS 5.5 to a virtual machine on a ESXi 6.0 Environment.

The operation fails every time at 30% with this error message:

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: '/usr/lib/vmware-converter/copyFileSystem.sh did not finish producing output after 3600 seconds'

Maybe some one could have a look at the attached logfiles and point me in the right direction?

Problems vCenter Converter whith Linux LVM

Hi all,

I have a problem when migrating VM (RHEL/CentOS 6/7) from "XenServer 6.5" to "VMware vSphere Hypervisor" with linux servers partitioned with LVM, if they VM are partitioned with "standard partition mode" i don't have any problems, when migrating this VM partitioned whith LVM i try to boot the VM but the screen remains black with a white "cursor". I am reading various forums and articles but i don't see any solution.

I would appreciate if someone people can help me with this problem or if it has happened and knows the solution.

As a reminder, indicate that i uninstall the xentools and restart the VM before starting the migration.

Best regards.

Good evenning, during a P2V conversion of a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 I obtain : Warning: Unable to locate the required Sysprep files. Upload them under 'C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\sysprep\svr2003' on the Converter server machine. See 'Help' for more details. I obtain from Microsoft Site the Sysprep file .exe, I extract it and found into SP2QFE the deploy.cab that I extract into ...\svr2003. I verified that the Sysprep.exe has the version 5.2.3790.3959 (92,0 kb,  17/02/2007 02:45). I obtain the same warning. I rebooted the computer, I tested on another computer, I tested with another Win2k3 source server I have to convert and I obtain ever the same error (warning...). Please can you help me ? I need to convert other 3 servers Win2k3 and I need to convert, I can't reinstall them :-( Many thanks in advance. Gionata

VMware P2V synchronization error. It thinks the volumes are file level.

Good Morning,

I am trying to virtualize a server with the sync option (Vmware Converter) to finalize the changes at a later date. All the volumes show as block level, but when I try to start the job I get "Synchronization cannot be enabled if one or more volumes require file-level cloning".

I have gone as far as moving the disks to a single volume (within Vmware Converter), but I get the same error.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I have tried to convert a physical disk with the program and every time I try it fails with the same error, FAILED: A general system error occurred: SQL_CANTOPEN:
unable to open database file
I have tried over 10 times and always get the same error. It usually failed after a few % but has failed at other times, once at 97%. I have tried with networking turned off, rebooted the machine, ran chkdsk on both the machine and external drive. the drive is under 700gb and the disk I'm trying to install the image on is 932gb free.

any suggestions? attaching error logs.

What permission are required for powered on source windows VM conversion using VMware converter

Hi,

The requirement is to use VMware Converter v6.1.1 to:-

  • Migrate a source windows VM server that is powered on
  • To another remote vCenter server
  • Conveter software installed on a separate VM in target environment

The VMware documentation is unclear. It states a numer of permissions are required at the datacenter level, but dosn't distunguish with whether the permissions are on source vCenter server, target vCenter server, or both.

When converting a powered on server, the converter server prompts for VM details rather than source vCenter server, therefore are the permissions relevant for source vCenter? We have an account with local admin rights to connect to source server.

Vmware converter also assumes the source server is physical rather than a VM (when converting powered on servers).

Thanks

Jas

Is there a vCenter Converter (integrated) for version 5.1.3?

Hey community,

I am trying to find the integrated version of vCenter Converter for vSphere 5.1.3. It looks like there's only vCenter Converter Standalone.

Is there a vCenter integrated version/plugin or does only the Standalone version exist nowadays?

Regards

Alex

Hi,

I read the v 6.1 manual about the "supported guest OS", where Server 2003 is not listed, however version 6.0 listed yet.

Is anybody can confirm if I can move Windows Server 2003 works with 6.1 (even if it's not supported) ? I can't change the Server - I know that Seerver 2016 is out, but legacy CNC machine works only with that old buddy

Prior thanks.

Convert virtual machine hyper-v (Windows 2012R2) to VMware

Hi

I have a problem when trying to use standalone vCenter Converter (6.1.1) to convert virtual machines from HYPER-V (Windows 2012R2) to vSphere 6.5.

When I try to convert a VM from Hyper-V I get an error when the converter tries to retrieve the hardware inventory of the selected VM.

The error is Unable to obrain the hardware inventory for select machine.

And the converter agent installed on the Hyper-v host crashes

Strangely enough, a virtual machine (30 VM on 3 hosts) managed to convert.

The vm to convert are protected by a Hyper-v cluster and are on CSV volumes.

Thank you for help me.

Fabio

Installing VMware vCenter Converter Standalone fails on windows 7 with error : Could not extract file

Hi,

I'm having trouble with installation of VMware vCenter Converter Standalone on my Windows 7 Enterprise workstation. I tried installing different versions (6.1.1, 6.0.0, 5.5.3, 5.5.2) and every time I get the error "could not extract file ." (with no file name mentioned, as you can see in the attached file) after installation begins (I passed all the installation questions successfully).

Prviously I had v5.5.2 installed, I installed v5.5.3 succesfully without uninstalling previous version. As I wanted to install the latest version, I wanted to make it cleanly, so I uninstalled my current version (5.5.3), and now I can't install any version, even my v5.5.2 that was previsouly installed.

Did someone already had this problem and found a solution ? Or do you have any idea that could help me ?

I tried to run the installer as administrator, but it didn't change anything.

In case it could have side effects, I have these VMware products installed :

- VMware Player

- VMware vSphere Client 4.1

- VMware vSphere Client 5.1

- VMware vSphere Client 5.5

To test the installer, I installed v6.1.1 on windows 2003 and I had no problem.

'vCenter Converter' fails to install with 'Error 29142: Could not start service Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared)'

Hi,

Trying to install 'vCenter Converter', the installer fails with this error:

    - Error ->        "Error 29142: Could not start service Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared)"

    - Event Viewer ->     "The Vstor2 MntApi 2.0 Driver (shared) service failed to start due to the following error: A device attached to the system is not functioning"

Environment is:

    - Physical Machine: HP Compaq nw8440 ( laptop )

    - Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP3

    - Run 'vCenter Converter' installer using 'Administrator' account

There is nothing attached to the laptop when I try to install 'vCenter Converter'

I tried:

    - Several versions of 'vCenter Converter' from 4.3.0 to 5.5.3 ( all of them supporting installation in Windows XP ) -> Same error

    - Uninstall / Reinstall USB ports ( USB Root Hub ) in the Physical Machine -> Same error

    - Restart several times the Physical Machine -> Same error

Attached is the log file the installer generated ( invoking the installer: VMware-converter-all-5.5.0-292238.exe /v"/l*v VMwareInstall.log" ) -> Search for: '29142'

Any idea?

Thanks
