VMware Vcenter Conveter Standalone.   When converting Windows 10 VM to new Windows 10 VM (smaller size disk), have issues with imaging (backup) failing.

Windows  system image appears to complete the backup, but then enters a "compaction" phase and fails with the following errors:

"There was a failure while compacting the virtual hard disk on the backup location. (0x80780151)"

Additional Information:

The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupted. (0x800703ED)

This problem does not occur when I use system image to back up the original (source) VM.  It only happens when I attempt to use system image to back up the converted small VM.

Both VM's boot fine under Workstation 12.

The target HDD for the system image is the same in both cases.  The VM host is the same in both cases.

I am attemping to P2V a physical Windows Server 2008 R2 server hosted by an HP DL360 server using the latyest version ov VMware Converter Standalone.

Conversion fails as it looks to be unable to recognize the 100MB hidden partition hosted by the physical drive together with the C:\ partition.

How can I bypass the problem?

Is there any trick I should implement?

Hi,

No matter what i've tried, adding routes (route add GATEWAY dev eth0 ; route add default gw GATEWAY) , changing VLAN's before conversion start, changing helper machine IP adresses , conversion didn't work out.

I've logged in Helper machine and found out that "eth0" interface is not down and i can not bring it up, can you guys please suggest anything else i miss?

Default gateway is accessible and pingable from both ESXi server which  i'm trying to use for new  VM and also from the source Physical machine. IP address is unique in the LAN, lost in suggestions..

I'm attempting to do a hot P2V linux.  I get coonected, machine creates new vm, boots but when asking for helper password it fails attempting to login with helper login, and password saying not found.   Then get message vmacore application loop.

Can anyone assist?

I have been searching for info on my problem and can't seem to find anything.

I have a XenServer Pool, Version 6.5. I am using the VMWare Standalone Converter to attempt to migrate VMs over to ESXi 6.0. The linux VMs I did worked great, no issues.

The same can't be said for Windows Server 2012. The VMs migrate over but when they boot I am stuck on a couple of issues that I just can't get past:

- Constant restarts and BlueScreens trying to boot. Tried Windows repair with no luck. Sometime I can get into Safe Mode without any problems but it will not boot up into regular Windows.

- A BSOD caused by xen.sys that I was able to work around that then turned into no bootable drive.

I have tried combination of uninstalling the Xen Tools, not uninstalling, installing the VmWare tool, not installing, tried exporting OVF/OVA files from Xen, etc. Nothing seems to work. When I try to look back and remember what I did and didn't do my head starts hurting.

Getting to the point where I am almost ready give up and build the VMs from scratch in ESXi. It may take a week of 14 hours days but at least I can move on to other headaches.

Any help, links, guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I converted win2000 sp4 physical machine to virtual (ESXi 5.5) by converter 4.0.1 and again by 5.5.3 according to Thread Convert P2V Windows 2000 ESXi 5.5

Boot of this new VM fails with bsod, I think problem is disk controller driver.

Can I have suggestions to inject this driver to converted vm ?

I'm having trouble getting the Converter to connect to the server.  I'm running Win 7 Pro and have successfully installed the Standalone Converter 5.0.0 build 470252 with the default settings (no advanced changes).  I am not joined to a domain.  I am logging in as my default Admin account.  I run the Standalone Client as an Administrator and the main window comes up.  When I click on Convert Machine, I get:

Unable to connect to VMware vCenter Converter Standalone server. Please check your network connection.

followed by:

The connection to VMware cVenter Standalone server was lost.  Do you want to try connecting again?

Note - I am not trying to connect to a remote machine, just the local server with the default account.  All the VMware services are running (Agent, Server, Worker) and all are set to run as local system account.  I've tried restarting all of them.  I've tried rebooting.  I've tried uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling and still have the same errors.  I cannot see any extra logs in the Event Viewer indicating something is bombing.

When I open a command window and try to connect to localhost via 443, I get a failure.  I've already tried opening the port via Windows Firewall and still get the connection failure so I'm not sure if my port is still blocked or if the server itself isn't responding.  I don't have any other AV or firewall software running aside from Windows Firewall.  Any ideas on where to troubleshoot next?  Thanks,

I have added  both the dll  generated from the SDK with strong name into GAC and now developing a code in powershell from the same.

Can I find anywhere a step-by-step guide on how to migrate a powered-down VM from Azure to a local server using VMware standalone converter? The converter's user guide does not mention anything about Azure. Thanks.

I'm trying to P2V a physical telecommunication server with two NICs and as OS SuSe Linux 10 Enterprise SP3.

Deploying the helper VM and grant more RAM *12GB* is working fine but at the step: Formatting the destination partitions the VMware Standalone Converter will fail with this error:

     FAILED: A general system error occurred:
     Network error. Host XX.XX.XX.XX key can't be retrieved. (return code 2)

But the helper VM and all NICs of the physical machine are available through Converter Server and vCenter during the process.

I also looked into the messages log on the helper VM and there are those errors:

Maybe somebody had the same issue like me and can help me.

I'm trying to convert a Linux VM from Hyper-V to ESXi using Converter 6.1, After it creates a target VM and boot with helper ISO, it sits on a login prompt asking for username and password.

Can anyone help on this please.

I am trying to run a test P2V on a RHEL 6 box to vCenter host via Converter 6.1.1 installed on a Win 2012 server. 

I have been combing the Internet for a source for these errors.  443 is enabled on the source (Phy) server as well as /etc/hosts.all (ALL:ALL) being configured.  I have 7 failed attempts and have run out of things that I can find to try.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

At the end of conversion, i have this message "unable to proceed since the sysprep parameters provided are not correct".

Is there any way to fix that ?

I have the erro in the title when reconfiguring an vm that was created with the standalone converter.

It was created from a physical mashine

Windows 7 x86

3.5GB ram

149GB drive

core 2 duo e8400

Hav etried to convert it to 2 different ESI hosts one dell power edge with 2 x5570 xeon quad core cpus and 32GB ram
and 1 of oure Blade server with 64GB ram and 2 6 core Xeon E5 2630 v2 cpu's

At creation it goes trough to 98% and fails with

FAILED: A general system error occurred:

InternalError at the stage that it tries to preces the reconfiguration store

The reconfiguration step goes wrong at exactly the same point.

whit the same error

Resources on the mashine that i try to convert

1.5 gb ram used and when the convert runs max 35% cpu useage.

my vcenter converter standalone version is 6.1.1

physical computer's agent is manual installed (can not push install from vcenter converter standalone server)

i also restart the source computer after install agent

now i have no ideal for this issue

I've come across an issue that I can't seem to get around. The conversion ALWAYS fails after 2 minutes and at 3%

I get the following error when attempting to convert a Linux VM (converted some octets to x):

"FAILED: A general system error occurred:
Network error. Host 192.168.xxx.xx key can't be retrieved. (return code 2)"

Here are the stats:

Citrix XenCenter v6.5 (64-bit)

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client v6.1.1

vSphere Client v6.0.0

VMware ESXi v6.0.0

I've gone through everything I can locate on the web, and nothing seems to work.

I can SSH into the VM from another VM (with root) on the same subnet that is already a VM sitting in VMware. It was a recently converted VM from the same source as the Linux device.

We are not using iptables, we have tried adding another network interface to  make sure that it can communicate directly across, /etc/hosts.allow and hosts.deny are empty, and I've even added ALL:ALL into allow to be sure, as well as restarted the networking services afterwards. We are using RSA and not DSA keys. We are using IP address and not domain name.

I'm at a loss as to what else it could be and what I can try next. Any help is appreciated.

It appears that for some reason, the helper is grabbing an IP address from our public lan, rather than the management lan. This appears to be the issue. Now, I need to understand how to restart the job with the existing helper in place after providing it with the appropriate IP address for the mgmt. lan.

If I simply retry starting the job, it errors stating that the VM already exists.

Can I restart with the existing helper?

I added in the IP address through the set up in the converter during the start of the settings, and everything is working.

I've been having issues with getting this Linux xencenter vm to convert over to VMware, and I've been able to fix a few issues, but now I'm not 100% certain what is next...

The error above occurred at 17%, but had also occurred at 11% initially. Disabling SSL got the conversion past 11%.

What could be the next issue?
