Converter synchronisation errors after changing location

$

Hi VMware-Community,

heres a tough one:

We are currently migrating about 40 Systems where we collect the customers servers (residing on XEN-Hosts) on his site and migrating it to a datacenter.

Since the customers limited bandwith and small migration window, we were planning to virtualise the systems using vmware converter standalone on site and move the host to the datacenter and start synchronising with the source machines.

So we installed an ESXi at the customers site with a Windows Converter VM residing on it.

We virtualized the customers servers to an attached iSCSI-NAS and moved the ESX-Server and the NAS to the datacenter and tried resyncing the VMs without success.

The error on synchronizing appears immediately on clicking "synchronize".

"A fatal error occured. The reason for this might be a network connection failure.

The wizard will close now.

Please check your network connection and try again."

What changed:

  • Location of the ESXi and the converter:

We moved the ESXi-Host and the residing unsynchronised VMs to the Datacenter.

There I added the Host to a vcenter and tested connections (ping & telnet) to the customers site successfully.

  • Connection between ESXi and the customers  Xen-VMs

Previously the ESXi was attached to the customers switch.

Now we are using Fortinet Adapters between the customers site and the Datacenter to have a direct connection.

The customers LAN is switched at the datacenter and we can access the originating VMs at the customers site via LAN.

Since I'm not the WAN-Guy in our company I have only limited knowledge about the link between the sites.

Another thing i had to change was the vSwitch the converter VM is using to access the sourceVMs.

So no new virtual interface or virtual MAC-Address. Just changed the vSwitch which is using different physical NICs on the server.

But here comes the weird part:

If I start an new process of virtualizing a Xen VM via that connection it simply works.

Same ESXi, same ConverterVM, same Storage, Same network settings.

Synchronizing does too. So I am at the point wehere I would rule out general network issues.

I successfully tested the required ports between the converter VM and the Xen-VMs at the customers site.

I sincerely hope that you guys can help me solve this issue because we have terabytes of data to migrate and only a 5Mbit-Link at the customers site, (and a 6hour  drive) between the datacenter and the customers site.

I'm grateful for any tips or hints and would answer any questions.

P2V vCenter Converter - Linux 5.11 Missing LVM commands

We encountered an error after the conversion was completed, It seems the LVM command is missing. Previously we were using converter version 6.1.1, so we tried using lower version of converter but P2V cannot be executed using 5.5.0 and 5.5.3, we are prompted by a network related error. Even after restarting the P2V server, same error still occurs. For version 5.0.1, errors are encountered when selecting the destination path for converted vm.

May we know if this is OS level issue? Is there any converter that we can still try between 5.5.3 to 6?

Convert a production server as backup on Virtual Machine

Hello All,

Sorry for the dumb question... I have an IIS server I really need to test as a backup on a new SQL server we are building... Rather than me rebuild an entire server from scratch i was wondering if i can just use the standalone converter on my production and throw the Image onto my esxi server? Once done I would boot it up with no NIC... remove from the domain/rename the server and then bring it backup up adding it to the domain under a new name.... Would that work or mess anything up on my domain? Just wondering if anyone has done this before? Would save me a ton of time knowing i have a fully setup and correctly configured backup ISS server.

Let me know your thoughts... In theory I would think this would but who knows..

P2V Linux secured with privatekey and passphrase

Hello,

I am attempting to P2V a Linux server using the VMWare Standalore Converter v6.

The Linux server is a DMZ server secured with PrivateKey and passphrase. The SSH is listening on port 33001 instead of 22.

Few things to mention about the environment is that,

  • the physical linux server is in DMZ subnet 172.16.0.x. with port 33001 opened to it for ssh.
  • Converter is ran from a Windows server in a 10.1.106.x subnet using privatekey and passphrase.
  • vCenter is on 10.1.109.x subnet.
  • VM is being created on the 10.1.105.x subnet

When I stat the P2V, it proceeds with the initial VM creation in VMWare and loads the temp OS. The job fails at 3% with the below error in the log file:

It seems to me that after the helperVM OS is loaded it is trying to access the source server and fails as the HelperVM doesn't have the private key or passphrase.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Cannot convert Centos 7.3 to vm - no errors

I've been struggling with this all day. I've read countless posts and solutions but none seem to fit my problem.

I am trying to convert a running centos 7.3 servers onto an esx 5.5 host.

Everything seems to go fine, it gets created on the host, but after a very long time, like an hour, it eventually always dies with no useful error other than basically, could not convert the server.

I've read countless things and all seem to imply that I should not be having such problems, that this is a pretty straight forward thing these days.

There is one thing I've not seen and wondering about. Am I supposed to install the vmware tools onto the same server that I want converted?

Something else?

Converting a Windows Server SBS2011 fails

Hello,

I am trying to convert physical windows small business server 2011  to an ESXi 6.5 environment including vCenter Server 6.5.

So far I tried the following methods:

- Simple easy going VMWare converter standalone 6.1 conversion (powered on mode) --> Convert succeeds but virtual Server is not functioning properly.

- Same as above but stopped services like SQL Server, Exchange... --> same result!

- Acronis offline Backup and Restore in Vsphere Server via Vcenter Server 6.5 --> same result!

- On the faulty virtual server, I tried to install VMWare tools --> it got better but things like Internet Explorer or exchange services are failing to start.

I also tried to do it with Cold Clone 3.03 and an ESXi 4.0u2, then V2V to an ESXi 5.5 and then to 6.5 but Cold Clone was not able to identify the physical network adapters of the machine.

Any tips or practices that will do the trick?

Hi

Im trying to migrate a VM using Converter 5.1 but I get the "Permission to perform this operation was denied" error message when i select the source machine (which is powered off) or when i click on the "view source details..."

I see the following error in the Convertor Standalone client log file "[05496 error 'wizardController'] Must be administrator to access physical computer"

The domain account I am using is a member of the Local Users group on the Convertor server and has Converter permissions on the source vCenter where the VM is.

Any ideas as to why I get this error?

Message was edited by: GuyTC : corrected errors in original question. It turns out my domain account was NOT a member of the Local Administrators group on the Converter server. Adding my domain account to the Local Admins group on the Converter server fixed the error.

"unable to validate the destination. Error: vmodl.fault.SystemError" when converting windows xp 32bit physical system

we are trying to convert a windows xp 32bit physical system from an ibm t30 into a vm on

an esxi 3.5 system, and after filling out the 'specify destination host/resource' with the name

of my vctr, the converter finds and displays it correctly.  however, when I specify either an

esx server, or a resource pool, get message:

"unable to validate the destination. Error: vmodl.fault.SystemError

I know the password is right, and I used the administrator account when I tried this specifying

a vctr, and the root acct when I tried it using a stand-alone esx3.5 or esx3i host, but get the

same result.

Anyone seen this before and know how to get around it?

thanks...Vicki

Session does not have required permissions

I've been trying to download a copy of a couple of my SuSE Linux servers so I can test doing upgrades but I keep experiencing failures with the subject line error message.  I used to be able to do this process all of the time but apparently times and technology has changed and it fails now.

I'm working with the following:

vCenter 6.0 appliance, build 3617395

vCenter Converter Standalone 6.1.1 build 3533064 running on Windows 10 x64 version 1607

First I create a clone instance of the server that I want to get a backup of so I can have it in an "off" state to run the converter process.

I run vCenter Converter "as Administrator" and fill in the blanks to copy the clone from vCenter to a local folder on my PC.  vCenter Converter is installed with both the client and server components on my local system.

The process runs and gets to 99%, I can verify that the files have copied to the directory on my local machine and then it experiences the error "The session does not have the required permissions."

The copy of the VM on my local machine vanishes and I'm stuck scratching my head trying to figure out what I'm missing.

I did grab the log files but I'm not experienced at reading them and they don't make much sense to me other than around the time of failure I'm seeing Unexpected Exception and faultCause = null

I really need to test these upgrades, any advice to getting this resolved?

"the source virtual machine is not recognized" using VMWare Converter 4.01 Stand-Alone

All,

We use Shadow Protect IT Edition to create image file backups of our servers. We need the ability to convert the Shadow Protect Files (SPF) into VMWare Server 2.x files. About a half of our servers do not convert at all. We get a message that says: "the source virtual machine is not recognized". What gives? I know the image backups are fine because I have tested them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

An error occurred while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts

Hello,

I am having an issue when trying to configure a VM from VMware converter 5.5.  I start up the software, and select the option to "configure machine". Source type is VMware infrastructure virtual machine, then I put in my server info and admin credentials.

I am now shown my inventory that I have in Vcenter, however.. when I select a powered off VM (doesn't matter which host the VM is on) and click next, I am presented with the error of:

An error occurred while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts

I am able to telnet to all my esxi hosts on port 902 and 443. I am also able to ping them by name from the converter server and from the vcenter server.  I am banging my head against a wall on this one..  Does anyone have any insight on this? Perhaps there is a file that needs to be configured within VMware converter to allow this to work?  There are no firewalls that should be getting in the way here.

Thanks for taking the time to assist.

"a component of the virtual machine is not accessible on the host"

Hello,

I am testing the converter standalone with some VMs after some changes in my configuration.

I have a two hosts cluster with HA and DRS and some simple VMs inside (all Ubuntu, 20 to 40GB disks, 1 to 4 vcpus, 2 to 4GB RAM).

I power off one of them, put it through the converter to a Workstation directory on the PC where the converter is installed.

I now want to get it back, I use the converter from Workstation to VMware infrastructure virtual machine and I get the message : "a component of the virtual machine is not accessible on the host".

All the same with other VMs.

I don't understand what is happening. Some blogs write about a CD ROM still connected to an ISO but it is not the case here.

Another gave a possible tip towards the fact it is a cluster but VMware does not confirm it when I look for some KB or official explanation. The cluster and some pool resources are the only changes made since the last time I converted a VM in the same way.

Is someone able to explain it, please ?

"Unable to Obtain Hardware information for the selected machine"

Summary:

I am trying to migrate two VMware virtual machines from Linux VMware server 2.01 to a VMware infrastructure install running VMWare ESXi 5.1.0.   When I try and use the Standalone converter to convert the VMware virtual machine to 5.1 I get the error "Unable to Obtain Hardware information for the selected machine".   I have followed the various suggestions on how to deal with this issue and am still Unable to import the machines.

More info:

I have a Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition (32-bit) server and a  Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (32-bit) server VMWARE virtual Machine image I am trying to migrate.

To do this I shut the machines down and copied the entire machine folder from the Linux server to a Windows 2008 R2 enterprise machine.

I have then run the VMWARE standalone converter (by right clicking on it and running as administrator)

I have gone into "convert machine" and selected "VMware Workstation or other VMware virtual machine"

I have gone and selected the vmx file from the machine I wish to import

Upon selecting "View Source Details" and or "next"  I get that error: "Unable to Obtain Hardware information for the selected machine"

I COULD run the Stand Alone importer on the machines however I would rather use the offline images.  The import process changes all the hardware and the change in hardware means reapplying the windows license keys.  Which means "what else is going on in the important software we use if windows is now thinking the hardware has changed THAT much?"

Importing VMs from Symantec backups

I need to create running VMs from Symantec BESR 2010, 2013 or 2016 backup files.

I remember that VMware Converter was able to import backup files up to versione (maybe) 8.x

The tests I made with Symantec tools were not succeessfull, maybe because I missed some relevant point.

Is there any (maybe third party) tool I can use to import VMs from Symantec / Veritas backup files?

Is there any detailed documentation about the right procedure to produce running VMs from Symantec / Veritas backup files?

Converter Host Key Issue

Environment:

VMware vCenter Standalone Converter v6.1.1 installed in local-only mode on

Windows Server 2016 with the converter installed on a physical server (ip 10.160.0.69/24)

Unbuntu Desktop 12.05 Test VM in a Hyper-V Cluster (ip 10.160.0.65/24)

VMware ESXi 6.0.0 (trial) on a physical server (ip 10.160.0.66/24)

Same switch, default gateway (10.160.0.1), dns servers

Hello!

I am testing a proof of concept for my company where we can capture any physical machine on our network and bring it into our Hyper-V cluster. The best way I have found to do this is with VMware ESXi and converter. I have setup a test Ubuntu VM that to capture to ESXi. I installed openssh-server on the VM and can ssh into it from the .69 Windows Server using Putty. When I go to convert the VM with VMware, Isetup the job and start it. It starts with 1% about 1 hr then 2% 3hrs 15min, then 3% 1hr, then 3% 1min, then failed at 3%. Here is the status the job ends with:

FAILED: A general system error occurred: connect (`10.160.0.65'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.160.0.65'): Network is unreachable connect (`10.160.0.65'):
Network is unreachable Network error. Host 10.160.0.65 key can't be retrieved. (return code 2)

I don't understand why this is happening. All your help is appreciated. I'll be at my desk to answer any questions or post any more needed info.

Thanks in Advance!
