Need to expand space on a 2000 server VM

Hello, I havent had to do this in a while.  I have a client that is running 2 Vmware 3.5 ESXi Update 4 servers.

They need to expand the space on one of there old 2000 server VM.

Ive used vmware converter int he past but havent used it in about 2 or 3 years so im having trouble remembering things.

Such as, will vmware converter work with a 2000 server vm or is that to old?

The idea would be to convert the 2000 server vm and in the process expand the D drive with more space.  I have plenty of space in my vmware storage.

But I cant remember, does the converter process do any kind of sysprep on it?  im not sure if they have any of the old product keys for this.

Thanks for any help

Mike

How can I copy converted Windows computer to MacBook virtual machines folder when message says 'not enough free space?"

$

I got a trial version of VMWare Fusion and downloaded the standalone converter solely for the purpose of running Quicken for Windows on my MacBook Pro. I succeeded in moving the Windows laptop image to a hardrive and connected the drive to the MacBook. When I try to copy the converted Windows machine to the Virtual Machines folder in Finder, it tells me I don't have enough free space. How can I get around this problem?  Is there any way to just clone Windows 7 and the Quicken application from my old laptop without moving everything over?

I'd appreciate any help.

thanks

Standalone converter failed to connect to a local server

Hi all,

I have installed VMware vCenter Convert Standalone 4.0.1 onto a Windows XP box.  My aim is to convert this into a VM on the same machine before re-configuring the machine as a multi-boot with a Linux distro.

I have various Ghost image backups, but I'd really like to be able to run the VM from within Linux rather than having to reboot.

When I try to start VM Converter Standaslon 4.0.1 I get an error message stating "Failed to impersonate current user to the converter server"

I then get a  form to input details:

IP Address / Name: (I can only choose localhost)

User name & Password

but whatever connection details I input I get the following errorr

http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/6004/VM+Fail3.JPG

I checked the services, and VMware vCenter Converter Server is started

This still fails even when VMware vCentre Converter Agent is also started.

Would appreciate any help on this stumble at the first hurdle.

Thanks in advance,

Disable GPT disk check - VMWare Converter 5.x

$

Dear VMWare,

I can't believe that this is STILL a problem after all of these years, this is still a problem????

C'mon now!!  Get off your backsides, and fix this!!

I have used the older versions of the VMWare Converter on an Apple Mac Pro (all of our Apple Mac Pro's) without any problems for YEARS.  Then suddenly you added some stupid "GPT disk checking" crap, that causes people to NOT be able to use the newer/newest VMWare 5.x converters.

If ANY GPT disks are detected at all in the computer, the converter will not work.  (So you have to manually open up the computer and disconnect any hard drives that are GPT).

This is a real pain in the butt, and please stop doing this STUPID CRAP!!!

Just disable/remove any GPT checking, and just IGNORE all GPT drives!!

If you're not going to take the time to do things right, and add GPT disk support to VMWare Converter (which is the CORRECT and RIGHT way to do things) and you're too lazy to do that, then just IGNORE all GPT drives until you do FIX the Vmware converter and DO add GPT disk support to the converter!!

This is not rocket science, please take the time to either ADD GPT DISK SUPPORT to the VMWare converter, or just IGNORE all GPT disks so that we can still continue to use the converter, but don't do half-AS**(  crap and create some stupid GPT-disk checking crap that just BREAKS the converter!  That's stupid!

At least let the converter run, and at least let us go back to using/converting using the converter, and just IGNORE any GPT disks!

We used to be able to select/deselect drives, and GPT disks didn't even show up when we did our conversions, and we never had any problems before.  This new VMWare Converter 5.x crap with the GPT disk checking error is a real pain in the backside.  So please tell us how to DISABLE your GPT disk check, so we can go back to using the converter again like we always have done in the past.

Converter 5.5 fails with message "A specified parameter was not correct. info.owner"

Hi,

I'm trying to convert a VM from local VMWare Workstation 10 (.vmx file) to vCenter.

After all the screens, before the process begin there is an error: "A specified parameter was not correct. info.owner".

This is discussed in several places such as here: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/458434.

The reason for the error is that the source hostname is the same as the user name in vCenter of the destination target.

This defect is several years old, and I hoped that in Converter 5.5 it would be resolved but it is not.

Are there any plans to fix that? For what version?

Thanks!

vcenter converter 5.1 ERROR: kernel version has to be in format 2.6.*, version 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.i686 is not supported

Hello,

i'm trying to convert P2V a linux CEntos 6.0 physical machine to a virtual machine using vcenter converter 5.1. the conversion starts normally, but at 97% it failed with the following error issued in the logs "ERROR: kernel version has to be in format 2.6.*, version 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.i686 is not supported".

Can you help please ?

The host is ESXi5.5.

i attached here the log file of the converter

Is it possible to stop the conversion from going through the management network?

Our management network is on 172.16.0.0/16 and our production network is 10.0.0.0/8

When we try to do P2V conversion, all the traffic is going through the firewall we are using to route between the 2 networks, which is not really set up to handle that much traffic and it's resulting is extremely slow conversions.

Is it possible to get the converter to push that traffic through the production network instead?

system is 3 ESXi hosts clustered within vcenter 5.5.  Storage is on a SAN

Has anyone seen this error after specifying the IP and credentials for a target machine when using vmware P2V utility for workstation?  I can't find the meaning in vmware's KB

I'm trying to convert a Windows XP PC, as a VM onto ESXi Server (3.5.0). I'm using vCenter Standalone Converter 4.3.0. The conversion always fails at 1%. Anyone come across this before and if so, how can I get this working?

Many thanks.

vCenter 5.5 - Grub error hot-cloning Ubuntu 12.04

Hi All--

I am having quite a time hot-cloning an Ubuntu 12.04 VM from one vHost to another vHost.

Both vHosts are running ESXi 5.0.0 build 623860.  I am using the VMWare vCenter Converter Standalone Client 5.5 build-1362012.  The VM in question is running Ubuntu 12.04.2.  The VM is using LVM, which I have read may have an impact.

When running the converter, I get to 97-99% done, then get the error as follows:

an error occured during the conversion: grubinstaller::installgrub: /usr/lib/vmware-converter/installgrub.sh failed with return code: 126, and message: chroot: can't execute '/vmware-updategrub.sh': exec format error

error running vmware-updategrub.sh through chroot into /mnt/p2v-src-root

/usr/lib/vmware-converter/installgrub.sh: line 143: /mnt/p2v-src-root: is a directory

I have looked all over trying to find anyone that has received that exact error message, but cannot.  I have tried the steps outlined here but have been unsuccessful.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2052628

If anyone has any insight into why this error is occuring, how to fix it, etc, it would be greatly appreciated!!

"Error: Unable to obtain the IP address of the destination virtual machine running the Converter helper server." with static IP address

Hi all,

I am trying to p2v linux 6.4. It fails with the following message:

Error: Unable to obtain the IP address of the destination virtual machine running the Converter helper server.

I saw discussion about this message but they all refer to dynamic IP address taken from DHCP while in my case I use static IP address.

While waiting for the p2v (which then fails ...) I open helper machine console and saw a message:

eth0 is not a recognized interface.

Can anybody tell me what is going on ?

Sysprep Location

I am running vmware converter from a remote machine.  I wish to rename and generate a new SID for the converted machine.  I have downloaded the XP SP2 sysprep.  Should the sysprep files be located on the system to be converted or on the remote vmware converter manchine?  My hunch is they should be on the system to be converted.

A general system error occured: uknown internal error Windows 7 VMware Converter Standalone

Hi,

When I have recently tried to convert a physical to a virtual using Vmware Converter Standalone, I've got this error: A general system error occured: uknown internal error.

Given the fact that I am using Windows 7 I've got two active volumes: C and System Reserved volume. When I uncheck this System Reserved volume, volume C starts converting, but it stops at 98%, and that new virtual machine cannot be started due to the fact that bootmngr is missing. So, this error: A general system error occured: uknown internal error  appears when i check these two active volumes, and click finish to start converting- but the conversion doesn't start.

So can someone help me?

Thank you in advance.

Incorrect Sysprep Warning?

From the converter log:

--2008-03-13 10:11:51.649 'P2V' 3676 error --sysprepVersionWin32,74 Invalid sysprep files. Reason: Sysprep version 5.2.3790.1830 (srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447) is not compatible with guest os version 5.1

I beg to differ.

When I started the Standalone converter to convert the local Windows 7 laptop, the converter would go through the process, then failed at last step, I was able to see from the vSphere server site that after the VM is created, it started to delete it right away, how can I find the problem?

I have attached the vcenter server screen capture here
