I am trying to P2V several servers running Server 2008 R2. They all fail at about 1 minute with the error:
Failed: Unable to create a VSS snapshot of the source volume.
Error code: 2147754767 (0x8004230F)
I have tried using VMware-converter-all-5.0.1-875114 and also VMware-converter-en-5.1.0-1023810. I have verified the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider and Volume Shadow Copy services are enabled and running.

Any suggestions on how to fix this??
So here I am again.
Running a V2V conversion on a Windows 2K8 box. I get the "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine." error when I try the conversion. So I try running the "vmware-vdiskmanager with the -R option and it replies "No errors were found on the virtual disk,...". I try the conversion again and the same error. The error comes back almost instantaneously.
Attached is the generated log files. I looked but I would like another opinion because I can't seem to fix it.
This is using Converter 5.1.
Hello,
I'm trying to convert a physical machine which runs RedHat EL 5.1 with Converter Standalone 5.1 installed on Windows 7.
The process start by taking the fingerprint of the source system and this step fails. I see in '/var/log/secure' that SSH connections are succesful (root connection is allowed, both source machine and converter are on the same LAN and IP addresses are authorized anywhere).
During the attempt, I can see that the temporary folder is created under /tmp/.
I tried with Convert 5.0.1 & 4.1, but same failure.
Anyone has an idea of the root cause?
I'm trying to convert a physical Windows Server 2003 SP2 Web Edition with the converter (v 5.1) and every time it fails with the error " FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion: 'Platform-specific error 2338'
Some of the errors in the log appear to point to a disk problem but I defragmented the disk and then ran a chkdsk and the disk looks good.
I appreciate any help.
Aloha, I have found that I can sometimes do conversion of the same computer or image file several time with different results and they all seem to be with DNS. Now I have no idea of how the conversion can start then fail later due to DNS. I would think that since the start of the conversion VMWare would have the IP address then would use the IP address to continue the conversion. this would eliminate the DNS failures and failed conversions. I am finding that if I replace the computer name with the IP address the conversion completes much sooner than with the use of the computer name. Wouldn't it be a good idea that the software do that on it's own? It would help a lot since I see many, many user issues online with the same problem of the conversion terminating because it cannot find the host. I think it would be a good idea to only use DNS once to get the IP address then continue with the IP address. What am i missing here?
I have eight physical hosts to migrate, five are running CentOS 4.5+ and seem to be manageable. The other three are running RHEL 3.0 (no Update level).
I tried the RHEL ones first with converter version 5.1. I got an issue as pasted below from the log:
--> msg = "An error occurred during the conversion: 'GrubInstaller::InstallGrub: /usr/lib/vmware-converter/installGrub.sh failed with return code: 139, and message:
--> /mnt/p2v-src-root/sys does not exist. Not mounting
--> /usr/lib/vmware-converter/installGrub.sh: line 132: 1997 Segmentation fault chroot "$argRootPath" /$updateGrubName "$argGrubVersion" "$argBootDisk" "$argInstallPart" /$deviceMapName
--> umount: can't umount /mnt/p2v-src-root/sys: No such file or directory
--> Error running vmware-updateGrub.sh through chroot into /mnt/p2v-src-root
--> /usr/lib/vmware-converter/installGrub.sh: line 143: /mnt/p2v-src-root: Is a directory
I started debugging Grub issues, but could only find 1 vs 2 types of problems, for Ubuntu. This server says it's running GNU GRUB 0.93.
So I starting think of overall compatibility:
VMware Compatibility Guide: Guest/Host Search
The matrix seems to say only the last update level (Update 9) of RHEL 3.x is supported by ESXi 5.x (I have 5.1U1).
So now I have three courses of action:
1. Since I can't find the exact return code 139 for my problem above in Google, should I keep trying to make it work as-is? What was the big difference in RHEL 3 Update 9 that allows ESXi 5 to support it (but not Update 8 or earlier)? Was it just formal support, but it will probably still 'work'? Either way - do I have a shot if I keep debugging this Grub error?
2. Or - should I be looking to upgrade my host to RHEL 3 Update 9? (I am not sure if this is even possible, or how difficult it will be - thus my next question)
3. Or - should I be looking at doing some sort of a net dd operation, and then manually updating the devices to the ones ESXi provides virtually to try to get these to bootstrap virtually?
CAVEAT: One thing I will mention is this - I am 3,000 miles from the servers, and the staff doesn't seem able to do much beyond powering on/off. I would think of having DRACs installed, but that would also cost a lot (their hourly rate is high), and I don't want them tearing apart these legacy machines just for that. In summary, I would like to get these virtualized without powering down at all. I believe minor RHEL upgrades can be done without powering down, but I have no idea on this old version. Net dd should be fine. I just can't be relying on rebooting the physical machines and doing terminal work unless I decide I have to fly to the site to finish this.
EDIT: I would also like to add this - for my Centos machines, the one that I got to work only did so because I downgraded to Converter version 5.0.1, and converted the LVM to basic during conversion (based on other threads here). Perhaps I should be trying version 4.x of the Converter for these ancient RHEL 3.x machines?
Hi all,
I'm kinda stuck atm.
We are using 2 ESXi servers. I'd like to convert the servers of 1 ESXi to another.
I'm using Converter Standalone 5.1.
The source server is running ESXi 4.0, the destination is running ESXi 5.1.
Now when i'm trying to convert an offline machine, the host that is running
the standalone converter software crashes and reboots. I've tested this on several machines with different OS's, they all crash.
Out of the 4 VM's running on the source server, i succeeded in converting 2 machines to the new server.
The other 2 are giving me these issue's.
Could you give me any pointers of how to trouble shoot this? cause it's not giving me any errors
to work with.
Thanks in advance.
I seem to be having an issue (hot-clone) converting a RedHat ES 3 box to our VM environment using the Standalone Converter.
I consistently get to 99% conversion at which point I get: Error: Failed to reconfigure the target virtual machine.
Reading into the logs I have noticed there appears to be an issue with GRUB?

Hi,
I'm running Converter Standalone version 5.1.0 and am attempting to P2V a physical Centos 5.3 server to my vSphere 5.1 environment. When the conversion job kicks-off, the helper VM is created, it powers on and boots up ok, the job log says "Connected to the Converter helper server on the destination virtual machine" and then the helper VM powers off and deletes and the job fails with the message "Failed at 1%. A general system error has occurred: Network error. Host <hostname of source machine> key can't be retrieved (return code 2)".
I am able to SSH to the server and login as root without a problem. When Converter initially connects to the machine when I'm setting up the job, it retrieves all it's details OK and shows me all its configuration information OK etc. I'm thinking that the "key can't be retrieved" in the failure message is the clue, but I don't know what "key can't be retrieved" means.
HELP!
Regards,
George.
I hope this is acceptable - I posted this under ESXi 5 since it gets more traffic and it's a general question, but I haven't gotten feedback there yet.
Overall my conversions seem viable leaving VS Tools in place. I think in reality, anything VS Tools added is replaced by the basic Converter operation anyway!
This is my original thread on it:
Any reason why Virtual Iron tools needs to be disabled?
Hope someone has some feedback...
I have a couple of Server 08 R2 machines where the P to V conversion fails. I did some digging and the problem appears to be related to the 100mb System Reserved Partition that has 0% free space available. Conversion fails with the below error.
The VSS snapshots cannot be stored because there is not enough space on the source volumes or because the source machine does not have any NTFS volumes. Error code:
2147754783 (0x8004231F).
Has anyone had this issue and came up with a solution or work around?
Thanks in advance
I have a Dell server running 2003 Server- Standard SP2 and Exchange 2003

Laptop and destination host both have plenty of horsepower. I have successfully converted a few other

This is testing before final leap into full virtualization.
I am getting fails on conversion attempts.
Ideas anybody? TIA

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a bit of advice
Currently using VMware Workstation 9 and things are going great, I've P2V'd a couple of local machines on the network using the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client (5.1) and had no issues at all.
What I am currently looking to do now however is proving somewhat challenging.
I have a web/database server which is in a datacenter that I wish to P2V. The server is running Windows 2008 Server R2 edition and I can connect to the server using Remote Desktop. I have access to the firewall on the server (it only has the default / built in Windows firewall) and I have access to the firewall in the office here.
The server is limited on disk space, it has two physical drives as:
C: 30GB (2.7GB free space)
D: 16GB (5.1GB free space)
The lack of local disk space is naturally preventing me from running the P2V and storing the img locally, then downloading via FTP or similar.
Therefore, I'm wondering what my options are...
Would it be feasible to try and run the P2V from the office (bandwidth is 30Mb downstream, 3Mb upstream)? If so, what prerequisites would be required in terms of firewall ports or maybe even VPN connections?
Any other suggestions on how best to P2V this machine would be welcomed
Now I install Converter Standalone Client 5 on windows 7 Sp1 64bit
But when opening see message :
config file error: not well-formed (invalid token) (Line 4)
