Convertor 5.1 standalone version synchronisation query

$

I am using 5.1 standalone versions for V2V and P2V migrations.. i have a question reg that Final Synchronisation.. here is my scenario.. I have VM or Physical machine to be migrated using hot clone  to new VM farm... Once job complets in convertor, i will changee Host name and IP address and give it to users for testing, still Source productio machine is
running on network and also i haven't done final synchronisation for target VM...Once users tested on target machine , i have to stop the services on source server and need to run Final sync.

My question is that can we do final syn to target server from source eventhough we changed host name and IP on target server.. if so do we need to powered down target server or is there any dependent on hostname or IP Address for final sync.

Please suggest me on this at the earliest.. i have to plan that.

Converter 4.0 to ESXi 5.1, is it possible ?

Hi,

I've a customer who want to migrate his physical server to virtual server.

He have Windows 2003 SP2, 2003 SP1, 2000 SP4 and NT4 server.

Before upgrading his server to an higher version (2008 or 2012), he want to P2V them.

The last converter version supporting 2003 SP2,SP1 & 2000 SP4 is Converter 4.0.

I'ld like to know if it is possible to use VMware vSphere Converter 4.0 to an ESXi 5.1 system ?

Same questions for VMware vSphere Converte 3.0.3 to en ESXi 5.1 system ?

Thanks for your reply.

Hello

I'm trying to do a P2V with vmware converter standalone 5.5

The source is the same machine that hosts vmware converter 5.5

The operating system is W2003 which acts as domain controller

Vmware-converter is launched by the administrator account.

The error I can see from the vmware-converter.worker logs is:

This had happened before with another server (also W2003 DC) but which hardware was completely different; unfortunately I wasn't able to solve that time.

Any help or hints would be appreciated, thanks in advance

First, sorry for my por English.

I have a problem. On having turned P2V on a servant the following message appears:

Phisical Server: Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

"Permission to perform this operation was denied"

After many attempts I check the logs and I found the following thing:

Hi All, I know that this error is already document on this forum, but any of the solutions listed works for me, I'm working with Converter Standalone 5.5.0 and I can't work with the old one because the server have GPT partions, and only works with this Converter versions, the system I try to convert is Windows 2003 x86. I found some error logs, but I really don't understand the error, can somebody help with this, I already try disabling the antivirus, firewall, local conversion, local administrator, but nothings work... the only thing missing here is rebooting the server. I'm adding the logs.

hi

Can I migrate a physical Debian Etch/Lenny server using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.x to ESX/vSpehere?

Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine.

Hello,

I am using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.1 in order to convert an old VMware Server 2 machine for ESXi 5.5

I clicked the "Convert machine" button, selected "VMware Workstation or other VMware machine" as source type.

As virtual machine file I selected the VMX file.

Clicking next, I get the "Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine" error.

I am using 7SP1 64bit, no firewall nor antivirus.

Thank you,

Francesco

I am trying to convert the two remaining vm's on my Hyper-V 2012 server. I am doing a physical to virtual conversion of a powered on machine since Converter 5.5 doesn't support 2012 Hyper-V. The vm's are both Server 2008 R2, one is an Exchange server and the other is a domain controller.

I have 2 ESXi hosts attached to a vCenter server. I tried removing the ESXi host from vCenter and converting just using IP addresses, that did not work. I have also tried using local admin credentials on one of the servers.

I already converted two other vm's with no issues, so I'm not sure why I am suddenly running into issues with these last two.

Attached are the relevant exported logs. I see where the error occurs, but I can't figure out why it is failing. Other people with similar issues seemed to have firewall, DNS, or disk errors. I don't seem to be getting the same errors I've seen others get.

Hello,

I am having an issue when trying to configure a VM from VMware converter 5.5.  I start up the software, and select the option to "configure machine". Source type is VMware infrastructure virtual machine, then I put in my server info and admin credentials.

I am now shown my inventory that I have in Vcenter, however.. when I select a powered off VM (doesn't matter which host the VM is on) and click next, I am presented with the error of:

An error occurred while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts

I am able to telnet to all my esxi hosts on port 902 and 443. I am also able to ping them by name from the converter server and from the vcenter server.  I am banging my head against a wall on this one..  Does anyone have any insight on this? Perhaps there is a file that needs to be configured within VMware converter to allow this to work?  There are no firewalls that should be getting in the way here.

Thanks for taking the time to assist.

What is strange to me is that I know I'm using the correct credentials and my account is in the local admin group for the target machine.

Note these two, seemingly conflicting, log entries:

Also found this entry in the gui log:

2014-02-19T08:11:55.909-08:00 [02612 error 'wizardController'] Must be administrator to access physical computer

What am I missing here?

I have verified I have admin rights on both the target and source computers.

I am using the correct credentials.

I am using the Standalone Converter 5.5.

Hello,

I am trying to convert 3 very large physical fileservers into 3 virtual servers. I am using VMware Converter 5.5 and have installed it locally on each server. I am converting directly into an ESXi 5.5 host without vCenter.

Each server is about 15 TB total disk space ( >10TB consumed), but they have different disk setup.

  • Server 1 has 1 C: drive, and 2 large volumes on 7,5 TB each.
  • Server 2 has 1 C: drive and 8x1,9TB volumes
  • Server 3 has 1 C: drive and 1 large volume on 7,5TB and 4x1,9TB

If I choose to run this with default setting (block size level copy, maintain disk size, all volumes on the same datastore) it creates the virtual machine on the ESX server and Converter reports the following task: "Task: Convert physical machnie". After a couple of minutes the newly created virtual machine on the ESX is deleted and after a few more minutes VMware Converter times out and reports the following error message:

  • FAILED: An error occured while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the Converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts.

You would think that this is network related, but as it turns out, everything on the network/DNS side is OK:

If I choose to run the same job, but change the volume size and shrink it below 10 TB, the job runs fine! (Are there any limitations to this in Converter?) The only problem is that by doing this, it changes the copy type from "block level" to "file level". With file level copy you are not able to run synchronization afterwards, which we really need to do since this conversion will take several days and there will be a lot of changes left out if we don't synchronize in the end.

Does anyone have an idea how I could work around this?

Having an issue trying to reconfigure a Virtual Machine that was created from a P2V. When powering on, I'm getting the blue screen 7b error on a windows 7 guest OS.

I heard doing a configure VM is the way to resolve this issue, but getting an error of:

I'm sure someone has come across this, so I have attached the log files for review.

Thanks much!

Stop Services during Synchronization only?

In Converter 5.1, when using the option to Stop Services Running on the Source Machine, are the services stopped during the entire conversion process, or only after the initial cloning and before the synchronization? We are planning to do a P2V conversion on an Exchange Server. It would be helpful if we could schedule the synchronization late in the day and avoid stopping the Exchange services until that time.

What username do I provide when converting a Windows 8.1 Pro machine!

  Hello All!

Thank you in advance for the resolution to my issue. I've recently installed vmware workstation 10 trial onto my computer which is Vista and I'm trying to P2V my windows 8.1 desktop as a test and it's prompting for a username and password. Now I login to my W8 machine using my microsoft account and use a pin to login, not a password. So far I've been unsuccessful at getting it to start as it fails with unknown username or bad password. I attempted to use administrator and the only password I could have used, I tried the microsoft account and pin/password and nothing seems to work.

Is there some other method that I can get this to work? I was unable to find anything in the communities regarding this.

Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Thank you again!

Peace!

Strange error, but the converted VM works

$

I used VMware Converter Standalone 5.1.0 to convert a VM from an ESXi host member of a vSphere infrastructurer to a different ESXi host not yet connected to a vSphere infrastructure (evaluation mode).

The conversion fails with the error "FAILED: Unable to create '\\.\vstor2-mntapi20-shared-5AF5023A00005006000000000E000000\$Reconfig$'." but I can boot the target VM and it looks to work fine.

I repeated the conversion with the same result.

How can I troubleshoot the problem?

Given that the replicated VM looks to work fine, should I suspect any hidden bug or problem?

Server 2003 DC VM, used Converter 5.5 to increase C:, added additional space to Disk 0 but isn't showing increase capacity for C:

Needed to add some disk space to C: on a Server 2003 DC VM so I powered it off, used VMware vCenter Converter Standalone to convert the VMware Infrastructure virtual machine. I changed the C: space from 12GB to 20GB, kept everything else the same. After converting I powered up the new VM to find that Disk 0 does show 20.00GB, however the Volume Capacity for C: only shows 12GB still. DISKPART shows Volume 0 (C) as 20GB as well. Any thoughts as to why Windows won't allocate the additional space to C:?

Any reason for painfully slow transfer rates with VMWare Converter?

By now I have been through several P2V and one V2V conversion using the VMWare converter 5.0, 5.1 and now 5.5 and all have suffered from very slow transfer rates. On 5.0 and 5.1 I have disabled SSL Encryption and while doing a local P2V from the physical machine or a P2V from a remote machine (all on a Gigabit LAN network) I have seen slow transfer rates of maybe 5 MB/s.

And now doing a V2V using 5.5, I am moving a VM from internal storage onto a SAN, I am seeing average of 2MB/sec transfer rates. This is with SSL enabled. And I am converting a 1.6TB VMDK (windows 2008) that has only 480GB used. For this particular V2V, I had to resize the volume and make it a thin from thick, so I realize a slower file level copy is taking place instead of a block level or volume level. But are these transfer rates "normal"?

Thanks for any and all feedback in advance.

Ubuntu P2V won't boot (ureadahead main process terminated with status 5)

Hi,

I'm trying my first experiment with P2V, creating a VM on ESXi 4.1 of an Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS machine.  The conversion runs fine (although I do have to resize my partitions to make them small enough for my datastore's block size), but the installed Ubuntu on the VM doesn't boot.  It just displays the error:

init: ureadahead main process (<pid#>) terminated with status 5

I've tried with Conveter versions 4 and 5 with the same result.  Is there a step I'm missing?  Maybe something I need to do to fix the fstab?

Thanks.
