100% successful P2V leaves multiple empty(?) delta files

0
0

I have done a successful P2V test conversion from a Symantec System Recovery image. Although it completed successfully, vCenter told me that  "Virtual machine disks consolidation is needed." When I go to look at the disks, for each physical drive there is a full size flat file, and four 1024 KB delta files. In the VMDK files, the delta disks appear completely orphaned - they only reference themselves (CID and parentCID are the same), and none of them reference each other or the original flat file.

I edited the VMX to point at the flat file, not the last delta, and the machine starts up perfectly. During the conversion process I used file-level copy, not block-level copy, as block-level would fail at 98%.

Any idea why these files are being created and if I can safely delete them?

Thanks

I'm new to vmware and converter and the community.

Hpe someone can help.

I tried converting an "sv2i" file created by BESR.

Once I browse to the Virtual Machine file, I get the following error

"The source parameters are invalid"

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Error converting Symantec BESR 8.5 with Converter 5.0.1

0
0

Hi,

I will be working on a customer's system from my office, so we've taken a copy of their Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery (ver 8.5) files and I'm trying to put them through the VMware Standalone Converter, but I'm having some problems, so I'm hoping someone can help...

A little background, this is VMware vCenter Converter Standalone version 5.0.1 build 875114, running on 64-bit Windows 7 Enterprise.

I have copied the BESR images to the local C: drive (hoping that would help).

Basically, I open the converter, click on "Convert Machine", selected source type "Backup image or third-party virtual machine" and browsed to the .sv2i file from the backup.

If I click Next, or click "View Source Details..." then I get the error "The source parameters are invalid" across the GUI.

That's it...

So, it appears that the converter doesn't like the .sv2i file.

Unfortunately, there's nothing which tells me what the problem is and I can't see any way of making the logging any more useful.

Looking at "vmware-converter-worker-1.log" I see the following:

2012-11-22T18:33:35.167Z [06656 info 'Default'] Impersonating user TestAdmin in session 52bf6f9c-9e0b-00cf-d26c-7695b7fea6f0
2012-11-22T18:34:51.084Z [05256 info 'Default'] Could not find the session object cache, will create a new one
2012-11-22T18:34:51.085Z [05256 error 'Default'] [sv2iParser,235] Invalid xml file
2012-11-22T18:34:51.085Z [05256 error 'Default'] [sv2iParser,180] Invalid xml file
2012-11-22T18:34:51.085Z [05256 error 'Default'] [ParseComputer] Failed to wrap C:\Temp\Machine1\Machine1.sv2i in directory C:\Windows\TEMP\vmware-temp\vmware-TestAdmin-1009\xtuljocgtropmovk: V2ILIB_GETINFO
2012-11-22T18:34:51.085Z [05256 info 'Default'] Scheduled timer canceled, StopKeepAlive succeeds

So, the sv2iparser thinks the .sv2i (XML) file has problems, but it's on the converter list of compatible products...

I've looked at the .sv2i file and my first thoughts were that the ImageFile entry was causing the problems - it was originally pointing to the original (customer's) backup folder as a UNC path (\\server\share\filename), so I changed that to a local path.

No change.

The next point I noticed was that the HistoryFile entry points to a file which only exists on the backup server, nothing that I have with the backup images... removing that made no difference.

Discussing with the customer, they're able to do convert this, so I'm presuming it's a fault with my system.

In the converter-gui-9.log, I see the following, which look concerning:

2012-11-22T18:33:35.302Z [08684 error 'Default'] SourceSelectPluginModel::BuildFilter 3rd party type microsoftVirtualPCVM not found

I've tried searching the interweb and reading the knowledge base, ie:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&externalId=1016330

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1004588&sliceId=2&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=507858552&stateId=1%200%20507870886

But that didn't make any difference...

Can anyone give me some pointers?

Thanks

QUESTION: Why is the first server (Identical hardware setup) OK but

the other one failing?

Can there be issues with the later version of Debian?

Greatful for ideas about this.

Ubuntu P2V won't boot (ureadahead main process terminated with status 5)

Hi,

I'm trying my first experiment with P2V, creating a VM on ESXi 4.1 of an Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS machine.  The conversion runs fine (although I do have to resize my partitions to make them small enough for my datastore's block size), but the installed Ubuntu on the VM doesn't boot.  It just displays the error:

init: ureadahead main process (<pid#>) terminated with status 5

I've tried with Conveter versions 4 and 5 with the same result.  Is there a step I'm missing?  Maybe something I need to do to fix the fstab?

Thanks.

Unable to convert Windows Server 2008 machine

I have checked all of these forums, yet the solutions are not helping me in this instant. I am somewhat new to Vmware, I can get around to perform most standard tasks. I am attempting my first conversion of a physical machine to a virtual. When I attempt to let the agent deploy it tells me it is unable to connect to the network share "XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX\ADMIN$".

I have enabled file sharing, I have run net share and the share is active. Is there anything else that I could be missing?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Upload a backup remove the original virtual machin

Hello,

A few days ago, I tried to use an initial backup of an existent virtual machine to create a new one (as it was a template) using vmware converter standalone 5.0 into my ESX 3.5 server. I use a new name for the new virtual machine but the process failed. The worst thing is that the original virtual machine was removed from the esx, not from the library, but from the vmfs

¿Can you think of any reason for this has happened?

Best regards,

Miguel

Convert a physical disk - Not a live OS

Hey All,

I've been looking around for a solution to this, but am having a lot of issues. I have a hard drive out of another computer that I'd like to convert to a VM. I've tried disk2vhd without much success (The OS won't boot due to hard ware changes). Anyway, I decided to try VMWare vCenter Converter, but it only gives me an option to convert the live OS I'm currently using?

Am I missing something here?

Any direction would be appreciated!

Thanks,

V2V Data Flow Question

0
0

Source is a VM on ESXi 5.0 managed by a vCenter instance in datacenter A.  VM is powered off since it is a V2V.

Destination is ESXi 5.1 managed by a vCenter instance in datacenter B.

Converter 5.1 server/client is installed on a VM in datacenter B.

When using converter to migrate the VM from datacenter A to datacenter B what is the actual path data travels?  As in, does Converter orchestrate a direct file copy between the ESXi hosts under each vCenter in each datacenter (vmKernel Mgmt to vmkernel Mgmt)?  Or is it from source ESXi to the Converter server and then to destination ESXi host?  Or are the vCenter servers involved and file transfer is routed through them?

Trying to determine exactly which IP's will be involved in the data transfer so we can setup some static routing and use a specific pipe.

Extremely Slow Performance

I was trying to P2V a server tonight and ran into substantial performance issues.   I was getting transfer speeds approximately 500KB/sec on each attempt.

Here are some of the steps I tried in troubleshooting.

1. Installed VMware Converter 5.1 locally on the server and ran it from there.
2. Removed VMware Converter 5.1 from the server and ran it from the Client/Server install from another server, version 5.0. (All subsequent attempts were client/server attempts from this server)
3. Restarted the source server with all services except for Microsoft services, TeamViewer and the McAfee validation trust protection services running.
4. Tried to change the cloning operations to run on ESX0 (previous attempts were to ESX1)
5. Tried to change the destination datastore to the local datastore on ESX1 (was using shared iSCSI storage)
6. Tried without changing the disk type (to avoid volume based cloning) to local datastore on ESX1

I've run P2V migrations successfully with the client/server install on the server attempted above.  So, it certainly points to something on the source server.  I didn't notice any CPU, RAM or Disk bottlenecks during the attempts.  The only thing that I could find was that I couldn't stop the McAfee Validation Trust Protection service from running.  Not sure if that would have caused these issues.

Has anybody encountered anything similar?

ps.  Forgot to mention that I have SSL is disabled in the VMWare Worker service.

Slipstream drivers into Coldclone

Problems virtualizing Windows 8 OEM using VMware Converter 5.1 and Player 5.02

0
0

G'day,

I recently purchased a Dell XPS8700 workstation which came with Windows 8 installed.

I want to install Ubuntu (not dual-boot) on it but before doing so I wanted to virtualize Windows 8.

So, I downloaded VMware Converter 5.1 Standalone, and used it to create a VM of Windows 8. So far so good.

I then tried to run this VM in VMware Player 5.02 (both the Windows and Ubuntu versions). Player recognises the VM correctly but when I try to power it on I see a black screen for a few seconds and then it exits. There are no error messages produced in the logs that indicate what the problem is.

Has anyone had success virtualizing Windows 8 for use with VMware Player?

Thanks,

Chris.

Do I need to run windows to use converter?

0

Maybe I'm missing it or not looking in the right place, but the only download I see for converter is a .exe file.  If I don't run Windows is there an ISO file download link somewhere?  I run mac and linux.

Thanks.

Converter fails to realign partitions after successful conversion

Hello All!

Was wondering if someone can help me out, i'm using Converter 5.1.0 i'm trying to realign a VM running Win2k3 32bit. We previously have cloned this box and made it a test machine, which i've converted that and the machine aligned no problem. But the production box will convert successfully but will not be aligned after the fact.

I use VM Check Alignment v1.0.5 and have been successful in validating 15 machines so far, but this is the first thats not been aligned after conversion.

I've tried looking online but can't find any posts, so wondering if you all can help!

Thanks!

VMware converter 5.5 failed with error Unable to partition the destination disks

I tried to convert a physical linux centos server to virtual. However, I received an error message at 1% as below,

Error: Unable to partition the destination disks.

FAILED: An error occurred during the conversion:'CalculateGPTPartitionLocations failed!'

Converting GPT partition is available from vCenter converter 5.1 and above, so GPT partition on source server would not be an issue.

Tried many ways such as changing datastores but still receive the same error message.

Anyone encounter this before?

Conveter 5.5 and RHEL 6 keeps splitting phyiscal partitions into multi VMDK's.

I am trying to convert a RHEL 6 server with 1 disk and 2 partitions to a virtual server. Each time I convert I end up with 2 virtual disk on the ESX side.

Is there a way to force the disk layout. I dont see a way to force this in converter.

Hi all,

I have just installed Converter 5.5. While trying to p2v I get (at the last step) the following message:

I did p2v for another server using 5.1 about 1-2 months ago and it just worked (the two servers are not related at all)

In the logs I found:
